Trash-- plagiarism of the new era

We live in an era where one can buy a book, change a few words and post/publish his own book. That is now considered acceptable and the positive reviews attest to this. In my world, it is and remains PLAGIARISM! The Browning/Gentner book was the source for this little dubious endeavor. We need to reject this type of abuse/theft. Not only does it hurt the real authors who do the work, it does not contribute anything to your knowledge as these re-fabrications lack accuracy and insight.

Shallow, but not actually bad

Having long appreciated another biography of John Browning - John M Browning, American Gunmaker by John Browning and Curt Gentry - I was excited to see a new book recounting his life. My anticipation turned to disappointment when I found that James Barrington's book added nothing to the story. In fact it read more like a synopsis of the Browning/Gentry book, or perhaps like a long magazine article. If Barrington did any research on the man beyond reading that earlier book I could not find any of it in this new work. His coverage of the arms was a bit more complete than of the man, but not up to what came before.
I picked up my Kindle copy for free, so I do not feel I was cheated. Anyone interested in the subject who has not yet read the Browning/Gentry book should find value in this one because the subject is so interesting. Anyone who really wants to know about John M Browning owes it to themselves to search out a copy of the real deal, John M. Browning: American Gunmaker, John M. Browning American Gunmaker. Perhaps in a library? You will probably have to find a used copy, but that book at least does justice to both the man and his work.

Excellent historical summary.

A good historical general summary and worth reading. A couple editorial comments by the author are out of place such as inferring that JMB viewed his LDS mission as a complete waste of time, and that the primary purpose of a pistol is to kill people (others would argue the purpose of a pistol is to save lives, and to equalize the weak against stronger, larger, and/or more numerous predators).
The book would benefit a great deal from insights on JMB's character and the personalities and relationships of those close to him. The book ends with a reasonable history but little revealed understanding of the man himself.
Still, all in all a good read on the towering genius of John Moses Browning.
