100 Years of The Best American Short Stories, by Lorrie Moore, Heidi Pitlor

The Best American Short Stories is the longest running and best-selling series of short fiction in the country. For the centennial celebration of this beloved annual series, master of the form Lorrie Moore selects forty stories from the more than two thousand that were published in previous editions. Series editor Heidi Pitlor recounts behind-the-scenes anecdotes and examines, decade by decade, the trends captured over a hundred years. Together, the stories and commentary offer an extraordinary guided tour through a century of literature with what Moore calls “all its wildnesses of character and voice.”

These forty stories represent their eras but also stand the test of time. Here is Ernest Hemingway’s first published story and a classic by William Faulkner, who admitted in his biographical note that he began to write “as an aid to love-making.” Nancy Hale’s story describes far-reaching echoes of the Holocaust; Tillie Olsen’s story expresses the desperation of a single mother; James Baldwin depicts the bonds of brotherhood and music. Here is Raymond Carver’s “minimalism,” a term he disliked, and Grace Paley’s “secular Yiddishkeit.” Here are the varied styles of Donald Barthelme, Charles Baxter, and Jamaica Kincaid. From Junot Díaz to Mary Gaitskill, from ZZ Packer to Sherman Alexie, these writers and stories explore the different things it means to be American.

Moore writes that the process of assembling these stories allowed her to look “thrillingly not just at literary history but at actual history — the cries and chatterings, silences and descriptions of a nation in flux.” 100 Years of The Best American Short Stories is an invaluable testament, a retrospective of our country’s ever-changing but continually compelling literary artistry.

LORRIE MOORE, after many years as a professor of creative writing at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, is now the Gertrude Conaway Vanderbilt Professor of English at Vanderbilt University. Moore has received honors for her work, among them the Irish Times International Fiction Prize and a Lannan Foundation fellowship, as well as the PEN/Malamud Award and the Rea Award for her achievement in the short story. Her most recent novel, A Gate at the Stairs, was short-listed for the 2010 Orange Prize for Fiction and for the PEN/Faulkner Award, and her most recent story collection, Bark, was short-listed for the Story Prize and the Frank O’Connor Award.

HEIDI PITLOR is a former senior editor at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and has been the series editor of The Best American Short Stories since 2007. She is the author of the novels The Birthdays and The Daylight Marriage.

"She remembers that everything she remembers is not necessarily true."
By Fairbanks Reader - Bonnie Brody
This collection of short stories proclaims to be the best American short stories of the past 100 years. It takes a lot of hubris to cull and choose stories published over a century and state, with surety, that these surpass all others in quality and attributes, The book is edited by Lorrie Moore, whose short stories I sometimes gravitate towards and sometimes don't connect with. The co-editor is Heidi Pitlor who edits an annual short story collection. On the whole, the stories selected for this collection are good, some are superb, and others left me shaking my head in puzzlement as to why they were included. It's easy to pull things apart but, for this review, I will focus on those stories I loved, some of which I may have read previously and others that are new to me but I will never forget.

The collection is arranged chronologically and there is a short description of each time period with a focus on the types of stories that were prominent during that era. I found this helpful and learned a lot about what was published and who might have been influenced by whom. There are a total of 39 stories, the first published in 1917 and the last published in 2014. Of the 39, seven stand out high above the rest. A few of these are old friends and some of them I have never read before.

Edna Ferber's story, 'The Day Old Dog', published in 1917, is very different from other stories of hers that I've read. It tells about a man's deathbed promise to his mother and, because of this promise - to take care of his sisters until they marry, he loses his own chance to marry and have a family. He continue to have dreams of the the life he may have led but they dissipate as time forces him head to head with reality.

Nancy Hale published 'Those Are As Brothers' in 1942. I had never heard of her before reading this story. Written in the aftermath of World War II, the concept of shared terror is explored, along with the power of strength and connection.

James Baldwin published 'Sonny's Blues' in 1958. It is about two African-American brothers who grow up in Harlem and appear to go in very separate directions after World War II. What touched me most in this story is its examination of the connections made without words - some through music, some through the collective unconscious, and some through inner promises we make to ourselves.

Mona Simpson published 'Lawns' in 1986. It is a brilliant exploration of the impact of sexual abuse on an adolescent girl. As a clinical social worker, I have not read anything that comes close to examining the inner world of a child/woman trying to make sense of an irrational life.

In 1995, Jamaica Kincaid published a story called 'Xuela'. In it, the birth date of an infant from Dominica corresponds to the day of her mother's death. The child spends her life wondering what her mother might have been like, what is the true essence of her father, and what comprises her own sense of self.

'What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank' is one of my favorite short stories. Published in 2012 by Nathan Englander, it addresses a 'ritual game' that exists in many jewish families. In this game, the family discusses who would be entrusted with their care and the care of their children if the Nazi's ever came to power again. In this story, two couples get together and the game leads to a startling realization for one of them.

'Diem Perdidi' by Julie Otsuka, published in 2012 is another one of my favorite stories. 'Diem Perdidi' means 'I lost the day' in Latin. This story is the most poignant and poetic in the collection. Narrated in first person, the reader is privy to the losses and gifts of dementia.

The stories in this book cover a variety of themes and topics. There does not appear to be a political bent, which I appreciate, and the 'political correctness' which is present in so much of today's collections does not appear to be present. For this, too, I am also thankful. It is obvious that the editors spent much time and thought choosing these stories and there are some gems in this collection.

Does More Than Recycle “The Greatest Hits”
By M. JEFFREY MCMAHON
Lorrie Moore and Heidi Pitlor who compiled this collection have undertaken a rather ambitious task: To select a representation of presumably the best stories of the last 100 years. The task becomes even more daunting when you consider the college textbook industry offers dozens of similar anthologies.
My definition of an amazing story is that in one reading it has the “weight of a novel,” the complexity, density, and texture that you might find in a 300-page book. Such stories are evident in this collection: “The Enormous Radio” by John Cheever, “The Whole World Knows” by Eudora Welty, “I Stand Here Ironing” by Tillie Olsen, “Sonny’s Blues” by Sonny Baldwin, “The Conversion of the Jews” by Philip Roth, “Everything That Rises Must Converge” by Flannery O’Conner, “Pigeon Feathers” by John Updike, “Will You Please Be Quiet, Please?” by Raymond Carver, "Friend of My Youth" by Alice Munro, “Communist” by Richard Ford, “What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank” by Nathan Englander, “The Semplica-Girl Diaries” by George Saunders.
There were some glaring omissions. For a collection that represents the last 100 years, I’d want to see “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Conner, “The Rich Brother” by Tobias Wolff, and “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love” by Raymond Carver.
It seems the “canon” stories of some of the authors have been omitted in place of lesser-known ones, perhaps because the editors either thought their story selections were superior and/or they wanted the book to have some freshness to it and not simply recycle the “greatest hits.”
I think their strategy is successful. The collection is both fresh and contains dozens of stories that have “the weight of a novel” inside them.
Perhaps Lorrie Moore is too modest to include one of her own stories in this collection. She needs to be in here. One of those “novel” stories I defined earlier is embodied by her masterpiece “Real Estate” from her collection Birds of America. I wish that story were in this collection. In any event, this is a very successful compilation and I would consider using it for one of my college classes.

Comparison of "100 Years" and "Oxford Book of American Short Stories"
By Dame Droiture
I ordered this in order to consider it as the required text for a short story course I will be teaching at the college level in a few months. The other book I am considering is _The Oxford Book of American Short Stories_, edited by Joyce Carol Oates. I am an Americanist by discipline, so both books would seem to "fit" well with me in this respect. Admittedly, though, I am fairly new to the short story form, insofar as teaching (I usually focus on novels and novellas), so I wanted to find something that would please both me and my students in breadth and variety of theme.

Both "100 Years" and the Oxford book have a similar price-point -- between $15-$20; it seems very reasonable to request students to invest in a book costing under $25, particularly one that will be used for the entire semester. But there are two things that are tipping me over to "100 Years," as opposed to the Oxford: the first is the introduction in each volume. Whereas Joyce Carol Oates' introduction is short and perhaps a bit scholarly, Lorrie Moore's intro is, on the whole, very readable, lively, and engaging. It rings with life, reality, and importantly, a connection with what is common (as opposed to high-brow). "100 Years" is also very physically lightweight (at least the copy I received, so this may not be true of the hardcover currently offered on Amazon); this is something I *do* consider when ordering books for students, knowing that all of us need to lug the material back and forth to campus. The Oxford edition is like a brick.

I cannot compare the two much further, though, given the differing story selections: Oxford chooses from hundreds of years of work; "100 Years" is obviously much narrower in chronology. I do imagine "100 Years" to have a much more modernist flair -- this volume is missing, for example, the lesser-known stories of writers like Hawthorne, Irving, Poe, and Melville, all of whom have, if not only a gothic touch, then at least engage in a newly-industrializing nation.

"100 Years," as you can see by the table of contents reprinted on the product page, begins with Ferber, Anderson, and Hemingway. Its stories offer very different sets of concerns, and thus a very different kind of appeal from a more over-arching volume like the Oxford. (And yet I should note here that Joyce Carol Oates, in the Oxford, has deliberately chosen many lesser-known / underdog stories -- some I haven't even heard of, even though they were written by famous novelists like Hawthorne.) But as in any story edition, it's tough to pick and choose what to include out of so many possibilities.

Both editions of stories have a short (paragraph-long) introduction to the author/story before the story begins -- a useful, if not required, addition.

I think there's something to be said for each volume, and insofar as teaching them, you would have a very different course for each. In a way, the Oxford book is very traditional: it captures stories from a (relative) height of story-writing days when books were still (relatively) expensive and people got much of their literature from newspapers and weekly journals like Godey's or The Atlantic. These stories were/are popular, and read (and loved) by thousands (i.e. Melville's "Paradise/Tartarus" short). "100 Years," by contrast, is modernist, post-modernist, and contemporary. You'll likely see more engagement with issues like feminism, depression, war, and (dare I say) existential inquiry. Moving toward more recent times in "100 Years," you'll also see stories that have likely only been encountered by short-story enthusiasts. (When is the last time *you* read a short story -- online, in a magazine?)

I do think the "100 Years" timeline is artificially limiting. And whereas I expect an equal representation of each decade (a decade itself being an artificial divide), I find one story for 1915-1920, and six (!) stories for 2000-2010. (Another reviewer has also pointed this out.) For this, 4 stars instead of 5.

It's still a tough decision between the two, though, for there are treasures in both.

Saved my son
By Amy Fry
My son was painfully shy and had difficulty making friends. Shortly after high school, he was at wits end afraid he would never learn the right skills to have a full life. I bought this particular book because of the reviews. This book became his life manuel. Now he not only has many friends but also has gained the ability to manage other people at work. My only regret is not finding this book while he was in high school. He is now a confident well liked young man.

By Solomon Yakubov
As someone who is not an efficient communicator, I am slowly learning through this book. It is truly amazing because it is so succinct in its descriptions of techniques. It has helped me become a better conversationalist, and has helped me connect deeper with my closest friends. This guy is a genius, and pretty funny. If you're the type that would need a book about conversations, this is the only one you will need, and I'm not joking.

It Works
By J. Penn
The information that you'll learn in this book works. I have only read the first and part of the second chapter and I'm already seeing my social life changing as I'm practicing the techniques that the author is sharing. How could it all be so accessible? Is what I've been thinking for the few days I've been reading this book and practicing the ideas. I should say that most of my life I've dealt with a crippling anxiety as it relates to my relations with other people. It's more intense at some times than at others but it's always present. I would cringe in paralyzing fear at the prospect of starting a conversation with someone or even just saying 'hi, how're you doing' to them made my head spin in pain. I couldn't accept someones invitation to go out, or even hang out on my own turf, because I felt that I just didn't know how to "be." Some would say I had social phobia. But I feel all this changing and this is deep for me. And from that premise I would have to recommend this book to anyone who's reasons for purchasing are similar or less strenuous than mine. It's a great book for anyone who just has that sense that they are not a part and that they view life from a distance and periphery instead of being actively involved in it. I see a lot of improvement in my near future based on using the principles presented in this book. Thank you to the author.

Beautiful
By Nicole Morragan
This deck is part RWS, part Thoth, part Deviant Moon. It is part feminist, part masculine. This is a great study deck, as it includes the creator/authors own take on Numerology, and includes Astrological and Hebraic references. The images are dark, but not scary. The base cards are part pip and part illustrated. This is a deck worth studying and taking head on.

The artwork looks beautiful at first glance
By Daniel Goldberg
The artwork looks beautiful at first glance, but the graphics seem more obviously CG upon closer inspection due to the harsh lighting/rendering; the figures almost seem like stock Poser figures and the shader that was used on skin could do with a bit of work. Also, the name on my High Priestess card has a typo -- it is misspelled "High Priestness", with an 'n', so anyone concerned with perfection might be a bit put off by that.

By Amazon Customer
I try to speak logically and rationally with most things, but I find that difficult with tarot. That said, I felt a strong pull towards this deck, which was gifted to me. It has worked well for me, giving consistent, clear readings for the past year. The cards are well-made, durable enough to withstand frequent use, and the designs carry high amounts of symbolism that help with the meanings. However, everyone is different, and it is possible that this deck will not work well for you. Be aware before purchase that this deck does contain heavy amounts of symbolism and is not the easiest to learn for beginning tarot users.

GUARDIANS OF GA'HOOLE is a classic hero mythology about the fight between good and evil. This series is filled with adventure, suspense, and heart.

In the first book in the GUARDIANS... series, the reader is introduced to Soren, a barn owl and the centerpiece of the series. When Soren is pushed from his family's nest by his older brother, he is rescued from certain death on the forest floor by agents from a mysterious school for orphaned owls, St. Aggie's. When Soren arrives at St. Aggie's, he suspects there is more to the school than meets the eye. He and his new friend, the clever and scrappy Gylfie, find out that St. Aggie's is actually a training camp where the school's leader can groom young owls to help achieve her goal--(cont.)

Dystopia...with Owls!
By Kelly (Fantasy Literature)
In anticipation of the upcoming movie based on Kathryn Lasky's GUARDIANS OF GA'HOOLE series, Scholastic has re-released the first book in the series, The Capture. Being an owl fan, I of course had to give it a try! Lasky is clearly following in Richard Adams' footsteps here, what with her invented owl words and the mixture of animal behavior and very human social commentary. The Capture is less intense than Watership Down in terms of both reading level and violence level, however, and would be suited for readers who might be too young for Adams' book.

Soren, our protagonist, is growing up in a loving, comfortable barn owl family. Lasky incorporates a great deal of information about owl behavior and translates it into the customs of a culture. The owls have rituals for their first bites of different types of food, for example, and for the stages of learning to fly. Lasky is skilled at depicting the intricacies of a social structure, as is evident both here and in last year's Hannah. The rituals of Soren's family create a sense of warmth and community, even if they do sometimes focus on owls' digestive processes a little too much for me. (Kids will probably love it. Especially if they've done the "examine the owl pellet" thing in school.)

One day, though, Soren tumbles from the nest and is kidnapped by several other owls. He is taken to St. Aggie's, which claims to be a school for orphaned owls. But Soren isn't really an orphan, and this isn't really a school. It's more of a cross between a totalitarian state and a cult. Now, Soren and his new friend Gylfie need to resist brainwashing, find allies, and escape St. Aggie's. The St. Aggie's scenes are creepy enough to get under even an adult's skin, while still keeping the violence level appropriate for the target audience. There are a few deaths, but the details are mostly glossed over.

Soren and Gylfie are inspired to heroism, in part, by the legends of Ga'Hoole, which are kind of like the owl equivalent of the Arthurian cycle. I really like the idea behind The Capture, which is that one should be brave in the face of tyranny and that stories can help build that courage. The book would have been stronger, though, if a few of the legends had actually been worked into the story. We often read that one character is telling the Ga'Hoole stories to another, but not what's actually in those stories. I've been a mythology geek for at least twenty years, so it's pretty easy for me to imagine what the stories are probably like, but I wouldn't necessarily expect a child to have the same knowledge base. One of the things that worked well about Watership Down was that some of the El-ahrairah stories were included in the novel. It helped build the world the rabbits lived in, and including the stories could have done the same thing here, and it would have lent even more weight to a touching scene where Soren and Gylfie make up their own legend to honor a friend.

Other issues include an unlikely coincidence, songs that don't scan, and an abrupt ending. It's not a cliffhanger, but it leaves much unresolved (presumably to be addressed in the subsequent books). This was an issue in Hannah as well, and maybe this is just a quirk of Lasky's style that I'll have to get used to if I continue reading her books.

Nonetheless, The Capture is enjoyable for the most part, and suspenseful. The prose veers toward the "textbooky" a bit when describing owl biology and behavior, but it's beautiful at other moments, and the story has a good message without beating you over the head with it. I'm looking forward to the movie.

Helpful, if daunting.
By jml
This book is daunting for a true beginner. However, I found myself reading sections over and over again, and each time I got more out of it. I didn't skate as a child, and started at age 55. It hasn't come easily to me. I'm glad I didn't get this book at the very beginning, but now I find it is particularly useful for pointing out common mistakes, and tips for correcting them. There are drills and diagrams, and detailed explanations of what each part of your body should be doing on a turn, for example. It's definitely a technical manual more than a coffee table book with pretty photographs, so if that's what you need, I recommend it.

Great book for beginners
By cobbdouglas
This is the only book that I've seen that teaches the basics in a very comprehensive manner. All the basic techniques (glides, stops, crossovers, turns, edges) are taught in detail, complete with instructions on how the upper body, knees and feet are oriented. The drawings and the checklists are also very helpful.

I highly recommend this book to all beginning skaters, and also for the more advanced skaters who feel that they need to work more on their technique.

excellent beginner's manual
By Karmakaze
I will echo what other reviewers have said: this is an excellent book for beginning skaters. It will help you understand and develop basic skills so you can progress in whatever direction you choose, even if it's just to have more fun and be a more confident recreational skater.

I like that she explains the value in each drill; what it does specifically (i.e. "swizzles" teach you to keep your weight on a certain part of the blade), and how it will improve your skills as a skater. I'm currently taking group classes, but it was due to the written information in this book, plus the illustrations, that I am finally able to properly do a backward one foot glide.

The actual instructions are generally detailed enough that the reader can usually grasp what she means just by reading, but the illustrations take it to a whole new level. The only possible improvement would be a companion DVD, but as well done as the illustrations and written descriptions are, it probably isn't necessary.

My only complaint with the book is that every once in awhile, she uses descriptions/terminology that are non-intuitive and would not be familiar to a new skater. It's infrequent, but a brand-spanking-new beginner will have to head to google from time to time to look up some of the terminology. In a book written specifically for beginners, that shouldn't be happening. She does specify in the beginning that the book isn't meant to be a substitute for a good coach, but realistically, she should have known that many of her readers would be people who do not have access to professional coaching of any kind.

Overall, for any beginner looking to learn some basics on their own, or supplement what they're learning in classes or lessons, this book is worth checking out.

In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin, by Erik Larson

Erik Larson, New York Times bestselling author of Devil in the White City, delivers a remarkable story set during Hitler’s rise to power.

The time is 1933, the place, Berlin, when William E. Dodd becomes America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s Nazi Germany in a year that proved to be a turning point in history.
A mild-mannered professor from Chicago, Dodd brings along his wife, son, and flamboyant daughter, Martha. At first Martha is entranced by the parties and pomp, and the handsome young men of the Third Reich with their infectious enthusiasm for restoring Germany to a position of world prominence. Enamored of the “New Germany,” she has one affair after another, including with the suprisingly honorable first chief of the Gestapo, Rudolf Diels. But as evidence of Jewish persecution mounts, confirmed by chilling first-person testimony, her father telegraphs his concerns to a largely indifferent State Department back home. Dodd watches with alarm as Jews are attacked, the press is censored, and drafts of frightening new laws begin to circulate. As that first year unfolds and the shadows deepen, the Dodds experience days full of excitement, intrigue, romance—and ultimately, horror, when a climactic spasm of violence and murder reveals Hitler’s true character and ruthless ambition.
Suffused with the tense atmosphere of the period, and with unforgettable portraits of the bizarre Göring and the expectedly charming--yet wholly sinister--Goebbels, In the Garden of Beasts lends a stunning, eyewitness perspective on events as they unfold in real time, revealing an era of surprising nuance and complexity. The result is a dazzling, addictively readable work that speaks volumes about why the world did not recognize the grave threat posed by Hitler until Berlin, and Europe, were awash in blood and terror.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, May 2011: In the Garden of Beasts is a vivid portrait of Berlin during the first years of Hitler’s reign, brought to life through the stories of two people: William E. Dodd, who in 1933 became America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s regime, and his scandalously carefree daughter, Martha. Ambassador Dodd, an unassuming and scholarly man, is an odd fit among the extravagance of the Nazi elite. His frugality annoys his fellow Americans in the State Department and Dodd’s growing misgivings about Hitler’s ambitions fall on deaf ears among his peers, who are content to “give Hitler everything he wants.” Martha, on the other hand, is mesmerized by the glamorous parties and the high-minded conversation of Berlin’s salon society—and flings herself headlong into numerous affairs with the city’s elite, most notably the head of the Gestapo and a Soviet spy. Both become players in the exhilarating (and terrifying) story of Hitler’s obsession for absolute power, which culminates in the events of one murderous night, later known as “the Night of Long Knives.” The rise of Nazi Germany is a well-chronicled time in history, which makes In the Garden of Beasts all the more remarkable. Erik Larson has crafted a gripping, deeply-intimate narrative with a climax that reads like the best political thriller, where we are stunned with each turn of the page, even though we already know the outcome. --Shane Hansanuwat

The evil that men do
By Chris Swanson
It has been observed that for evil to win all that needs happen is for good men to do nothing. That was what the United States government did, at least officially, for much of the lead-up to World War II. Too often chances to speak out and try to stop the madness that was engulfing Germany were ignored. Too frequently the atrocities were overlooked. Too many times our response to the crisis over there was nothing, nothing, nothing...

But there were exceptions. George Messersmith, who worked at the Berlin embassy, was one of those who tried, often in vain, to bring about some change in the US policies, though he was often ignored as having too vivid of an imagination. So, too, were various Jewish groups in the USA, though they were often ignored for being Jewish. And, eventually, so did William Dodd, the United States ambassador to Germany, though he was ignored because, frankly, too many people didn't want to believe any of what was happening in Berlin.

Before reading this book I had a slightly better than average knowledge of the history of World War II and what led up to it. But even for me there were things to learn. I'd never heard of Dodd or Messersmith. Never heard of Rudolph Diels, or Ernst Hanfstaengl. I knew, at least a bit, about the Night of Long Knives and some what lead up to it, including Ernst Rohm's penchant for pretty young men, but I didn't really grasp much of what was going on that led up to it.

Now, thanks to Erik Larson's latest work, I know these people and I have a much, much improved understanding of what was going on in Germany from 1933 to 1938. Larson gives you a great "on the ground" view of what was really happening, what people thought was happening, what everyone said was happening and why the differences between these things matter. You really get a feel for how Berlin functioned, or didn't function, during this time period.

Larson's previous work, Thunderstruck, where he tried too hard to link the stories of Dr Crippen and Marconi, didn't really work for me, which was a disappointment, since The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America remains one of my favorite books. I'm happy to say this book is at least as good and engaging as "Devil in the White City". This is an excellent, well-written, suspenseful book. Even though I did know the fates of some of the people involved, Larson's writing was still engaging enough to keep me interested, and to occasionally make me wonder if my memory of their lives was wrong (it wasn't).

Anyone with even a casual interest in the events leading up to the war will find this an invaluable read. It's easily the best book I've read this year, and likely to stay that way. A truly wonderful read!

Another telling work by Erik Larson
By Steven Peterson
This is the fourth book written by Erik Larson that I have read. In my view, this quartet is a pretty powerful body of work: The Devil in the White City, Thunderstruck, and Isaac's Storm)--and now In the Garden of Beasts. As with Larson's other works, there are several layers to this work. Larson begins by noting that (Page xiv): "This is a work of nonfiction."

At one level, this is a portrayal of a family. Key characters are William Dodd, an academic desperate to write a book on the South who finds himself oddly enough tapped to become the American Ambassador to Germany in the very early years of Hitler's rule of the country. There is also considerable detail given to Dodd's daughter, Martha. She was coming off a failed marriage and she (and her brother and William's wife) accompanied Dodd in his service in Germany.

At another level, the book is about the gathering horror of the Third Reich. Sometimes, Germany seems like a modern, civilized country. At other times, though, the darkness of Nazism manifests itself. One small vignette: H. V. Kaltenborn's advocacy of Germany--and his family's terror at a Hitler demonstration where they were frightened by thugs for not carrying out the German salute with the arm. Other small incidents that portend what is to come pop up over the course of the work, providing a dark backdrop to the surface story.

We see Dodd's interaction with key leaders such as Goebbels and Goring. We read of him trying to protect American interests while becoming concerned about what was happening in Germany. And seeing how his superiors did not want to hear negative reports from him. His daughter? She enjoyed her freedom with a series of romances--including with the famous World War I pilot, Udet, and--extraordinarily enough--the head of the Gestapo, Diels .

There is tautness to the work, as it moves toward its climax with the Night of the Long Knives. The book closes out with Dodd and his family's return to the US and events that took place thereafter.

Another wonderful work by Erik Larson.

History as a novelist might present it.
By Jill Meyer
Erik Larson is not a novelist but his books on historical subjects are as beautifully written as if a novelist had written them. He has written about Chicago and the 1893 World's Fair, a terrible hurricane in Galveston, Texas, and a doctor/murderer in London. In all his books, he juxtaposes two events or characters and flits between the two. In this book, "In the Garden of Beasts", he presents the Dodd family of four in 1933 and the growing menace of Hitler and the Nazi party. It's brilliant writing at its best.

William Dodd was a professor at the University of Chicago and a product of a southern upbringing. He was mild-mannered and subtle, but fairly ambitious, career-wise. As a self-described "Jeffersonian Democrat", Dodd had come to the attention of newly-inaugurated Franklin Roosevelt in 1933 when Roosevelt and his State Department were looking for a new US ambassador to Germany. Adolf Hitler had come to power in Germany at about the same time as Roosevelt in the United States. Both faced Depression-wracked countries and both set about helping to heal the economic woes. Hitler's plans were much more ambitious at that point; getting out of the Versailles Treaty restrictions and cleansing Germany of her Jewish population were also on the agenda. Roosevelt's appointment of William Dodd as the United States Ambassador to Germany brought many questions from old diplomatic "hands" at the State Department as well as among Roosevelt's aides. Was Dodd "tough" enough to deal with Hitler? And, what WAS "tough enough" in dealing with Hitler and the growing German menace? And, what WAS the "growing German menace"? Lots of questions in 1933 wouldn't be answered until later; later, after "The Night of Long Knives", "Krystalnach", and the whole bloody butchery of WW2.

Dodd brought with him to Berlin in 1933 his wife, and two grown children, Martha and Bill, Jr. It was Martha - then aged 22 and full of life and with a secret, soon-to-be-divorced husband back home - who flirted with both the night-life and the political intrigue of Berlin. She landed in exalted circles - both artistic and political - and lead a rather exhausting love life with Germans, Americans, and Russians.

Life in Berlin in 1933 was easy-going, but still "edgy" as Adolf Hitler and his Nazi party fought for a political future. President Hindenburg was still alive and Hitler was his Chancellor. He was still not in command and would not be so until Hindenburg's death nearly a year later. Hitler was also fighting within his own ranks. His old comrade, Ernst Rohm, led the SA and it was a threat to Hitler. "The Night of Long Knives", in 1934, was the coup staged by Hitler as he got rid of Rohm and a lot of other political enemies. William Dodd, sickened by the violence and the knowledge that Hitler was on the road to world-power, began to speak out firmly about the Nazi regime and the threat it posed.

"In the Garden" is a masterpiece of writing for those interested in the subject. His book, "Devil in the White City", with its story of Chicago and a mass-murderer, might have appealed more to a wider audience, but this book is wonderful for the history buffs among us. I also appreciate the sources he lists at the end of the book.

It was half of what I ordered
By justsaying
I ordered this book but WITH the lab codes and guess what? They did not work. If you need the lab codes for your class DO NOT buy from amazon, they are charging you for something that doesn't even work! The book was fine but I ordered it for the lab codes and was more than upset when I had to rebuy the codes for $50.

Floppin' all over the place
By RDeCoteau
Whoever thought it was a good idea to make this thick book a softcover, I tell you: it was not. The shear weight of this book, combined with the thin, slippery cover, makes it difficult to hold onto the book. Additionally, for whatever reason, whenever I put this textbook into my messenger bag (a regular messenger bag, nothing special), it always ends up bent and wedged under my other books. It's hard to even pull it out because there's no friction. I try to keep my things nice, but this book was the only one in my possession with dog ears and crinkles after merely one semester of use.

Asides from the obvious issue, this book was very informational and to the point, and it explained difficult aspects of biology in such a simple, succinct manner that I learned more from it than I did in many of my previous textbooks. I know I might be unfair if there is a hardcover available, but if there is not, this book can be a hassle. Get the hardcover.
