I wanted to like it

The first thirds book was excellent, dark and gripping. The third and fourth books aren't up to par. Especially "Rise and Fall". There was so much drama going on that I almost didn't finish the book. Like Austen said, "Everyone's sleeping with everyone." And that became the whole theme of the book while the main plot of capturing Hogan just became the side show. I really had high hopes for the series but it just became another cliche fangirl m/m fiction - with everyone having "issues" and they have to release it in emotional monologues, rambling about their feelings for each other. I mean come on. The same thing happened to the Cut and Run series.

I want the author to go beyond the idea of Therians and the Thirds. I wanted to her to dig deeper to the main plot and not be afraid of her characters. I wanted it to be a plot driven story rather than character driven.

Fantastic book, excellent continuation of the THIRDS series

Fantastic book, excellent continuation of the THIRDS series. I read this nonstop from cover to cover. Loved the storyline, characterizations, suspense and humor. I love Dex and Sloane. This book was different as Sloane was recovering from a serious injury, so the guys weren't partnered on the job. Dex and Sloane were still featured throughout the book, but in a different context. It was fascinating to see new or hidden aspects of their personalities and how they came through. Enjoyed seeing a little bit of the darker side of Dex, obsessed with finding and arresting Beck Hogan. Glad to see Sloane opening up and truly realizing what Dex means to him. Love that the characters are still growing and fresh.

With Sloane injured, we got to see more of the team particularly Ash as well as Sebastian. Loved learning more about the other members and seeing them all pull together as a team even with their leader injured. We see more of Ash in Rise & Fall and lots of Ash-Dex interactions. Happy to see Ash fleshed out more yet not losing his gruff and grouchy personality. After seeing more of Ash/Cael, Calvin/Hobbs and Sebastian, I'm looking forward to books concentrating on them.

Lots of action, suspense and character moments, this book ended all too soon. I've re-read the entire THIRDS series, it never gets old. Enjoyable characters, action, adventures and a lot of love underneath even if certain characters are too stubborn to admit it. Excellent book. I'm ready for the next one.

Story Review:

I must say I was so glad Rise & Fall picked up right where Rack & Ruin ended! Those were some traumatic times. It set our story up to see our heroes grow and change while getting the bad guy.

Unfortunately, Dex and Sloane are apart for quite a lot of the book. Dex having decided to protect his family no matter the cost leaves Sloane recuperating at home. Lies are made and relationships are worn thin. However from this comes determination and finding out what means the most to them.

We see more of the other couples’ relationships, which is nice. Ash and Cael as well as Calvin and Hobbs move to address their issues.

There is lots of action and adventure. Although Dex is a little tstl at times, he is still his crazy fun self and I liked the music references throughout the book. We see a sweeter, sappier side of Sloane and I really liked the time they do spend together.

The story set up over the last three books came to a close, but I look forward to whatever else awaits the Destructive Delta team in future books.

Narration Review:

I really like this narrator, he has different voices for the characters and he is easy to listen to. I like that they do effects for talking on the phone or over headsets, it lends more depth to the production.

About the Authors

Gene E. Hall, Ph.D. , School of Environmental and Public Affairs, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, has been a full professor at four universities and served as the Dean of the College of Education at two universities. Dr. Hall is internationally recognized for his career-long focus on developing new understandings about the change process in organization settings. He regularly serves as a consultant for schools, school districts, businesses, and state leaders on the implementation of various innovations and change processes from a Concerns-Based perspective. In addition to his work in the United States, he regularly collaborates with colleagues in other countries and serves on doctoral committees in relation to facilitating, evaluating, and studying change processes. His more recent research has examined relationships between Change Facilitator Style of leaders and outcomes such as increases in student learning. Dr. Hall has had a parallel academic career in regard to innovation in and national accreditation of teacher education. He is a co-author of The Foundations of American Education (Pearson) now in its 16th edition, and the lead author of Introduction to Teaching: Making a Difference in Student Learning (SAGE).

Shirley M. Hord, Ph.D. was the first Scholar Emerita at the Southwest Educational Development Laboratory, and is currently Scholar Laureate, in association with Learning Forward (previously, National Staff Development Council). She authors articles and books on school-based professional development, school change and improvement, and professional learning communities. A sampling of her publications are Implementing Change: Patterns, Principles, and Potholes with Gene Hall; Learning Together, Leading Together: Changing Schools Through Professional Learning Communities, Teachers College Press (2004); with Patricia Roy, Moving NSDC’s Staff Development Standards Into Practice: Innovation Configurations, National Staff Development Council (2003); Leading Professional Learning Communities:Voices from Research and Practice, Corwin Press (2008); and with Edward Tobia, Reclaiming Our Teaching Profession: The Power of Learning in Community, Teachers College Press (2012). Implementing Change: Patterns, Principles, and Potholes (2001) is the latest book on the process of educational change and leadership co-authored by Gene E. Hall and Shirley M. Hord. It describes the Concerns-Based Adoption Model (CBAM), a framework they have been developing for use in organizational and educational settings for the past thirty years. Within it they describe how people can and do facilitate change. Leadership today requires the ability to organize and direct human resources for levels of constant change, most recently in educational settings. This book provides educational leaders and change agents with practical tools and advice on how to effectively accomplish their goals. Among them are: innovation configuration mapping techniques, stages of concern surveys and evaluative tools, and levels of use matrices, as well as information on leadership styles and how they affect change.
The format of this book is not only engaging, but entertaining. Chapters begin with quotes in first person narrative, from real/fictitious accounts of people involved in change. The figures and graphics, often using analogies and metaphors for text ideas, add to the clarity and the readability of the book. Case studies and examples are interspersed with humor and credible settings and characters. Focus questions within chapters and discussion questions at the end of the chapter invite further thinking and discussion which makes it an ideal resource for study/focus groups who are dealing with change. Chapter endings also include suggestions for fieldwork activities that provide opportunities for active engagement with the issues being discussed.
While they caution readers not to use this as a recipe book (p. 103) it is difficult to overlook the accommodating and sequential format they use, filled with useful advice and suggestions. Hall and Hord offer practical tools and a unique combination of theory, research and practice for coping with change in organizational structures. With good humor and practical advice this is one of the most readable and useful books ever to help managers and change facilitators navigate through the difficult process of organizational changes.

Best Price for Handy Basics

This is a fantastic book - IF it suits your purposes. If you already have a massive textbook on the subject of orchestation (e.g., the Cecil Forsythe book) this book would potentially be redundant. However, used as what it claims to be - a concise, literally pocket-sized desk reference for the working composer or orchestrator - it is easy-to-use and informative. It contains basic information about every instrument, including ranges, transposition, tone color, tricks and special notation, impossibilities for players, and occasional scoring/arranging tips. For a novice like myself, it's very informative when read cover-to-cover; for an experienced orchestrator, it might still be handy for quick checks. Either way, highly recommended!

Great little pocket dictionary of orchestral instruments, range, technique, etc. I take one star off because the paper. Paper is not as heavy and opaque as I would prefer. The content, however is excellent and the format is very convenient.

This book is a great quick reference for anyone who composes music. Includes info on just about every instrument you can think of. Each listing has all the essential facts about the instrument, including written range, sounding range, and special characteristics. Well worth the six bucks.

An Amazon Best Book of November 2016: Last year’s Reacher book, Make Me, ended on a minor medical cliffhanger which I, for one, was looking forward to seeing resolved this Fall. But author Lee Child isn’t giving up the goods so easily. Instead of picking up where that book left off, he takes Reacher back in time to 1996. Still in the Army, Reacher is coming off a medal-earning career triumph when he is sent back to school. His three-man class (Reacher, a CIA guy and an FBI agent) however, is a front for a secret mission: figure out the plot behind a message intercepted in Germany which reads “the American wants 100 million dollars.” The good news for fans is that all the familiar elements show up in Night School: the words “Reacher says nothing” appear at least half a dozen times, and as usual, Reacher combines mechanical precision and brute strength to beat up bad guys with a degree of violence falling somewhere between Bruce Lee and a backhoe. Best of all, fan-favorite Sergeant Frances Neagley makes a welcome reappearance, riding shotgun with Reacher as he hunts for his quarry. Is the plot as robust and impressive as our hero? Not entirely, but readers will barely notice. Lee Child's new book, "Night School" - a little less of the Jack Reacher we know and love, but still very good.

I’ve read all 20 Jack Reacher novels, written by Lee Child. I jumped at the chance to evaluate copy of his newest book. You don’t read 20 of anything unless you really like the characters, and “Night School” is no different. Taking place back in the mid-90’s Military Police Major Jack Reacher is reassigned to go back to school – but it isn’t what anyone thinks. It’s really just a cover to investigate a possible act of treason and terrorism. Reacher teams up with his old colleague Sgt. Frances Neagley and a group of new folks representing the FBI, CIA and the national Security Council to find out what is happening and how to stop it. The best part of a mystery is finding out what happens, so I won’t spoil anything, but Jack Reacher does his usual thing and in the end prevails in the usual Reacher fashion. The interaction between Neagley and Reacher, along with the other team members is entertaining.

That’s the good part, now the part that isn’t quite as good. I like Reacher novels because over the years he has been consistent - Jack Reacher is a really interesting character – keeps a clock in his head – always know exactly what time it is. Calculates the physics of a punch before he throws it, etc. In this book, Reacher is a bit more superficial. There is a lot less of Reacher’s thought process in this book and I felt it made the book a bit less fun to read. In fact, I can only give it “4 Stars” because it’s good – very good, in fact… but it lacks a bit of what makes Reacher novels so enjoyable.

Reacher fans will love it. Folks new to the series will enjoy it, as well. I enjoyed it. I just wish Lee Child done a bit more to keep Reacher’s character as unique and entertaining as he has done in the past.

I love Reacher novels, and own them all, but this one was flat-out boring. Normally I can't stop reading and end up losing sleep because I have to know what happens next. With "Night School" I had to force myself to keep going. I'd suggest skipping this one, or waiting till later once the price has dropped.

Lee Child, in "Night School," takes us back to 1996, when Jack Reacher was a thirty-five year old army major who had served his country for twelve years. His superior officer, General Garber, orders him to report to the Pentagon, where he is supposed to take a continuing education course. However, this is merely a ruse to keep anyone from knowing that the President of the United States wants Jack and a select group of agents from the CIA and FBI to prevent a catastrophe.

Alfred Ratcliffe, the National Security Adviser, and Raticliffe's deputy, Dr. Marion Sinclair, inform Reacher and his colleagues that an Iranian spy working for the CIA in Hamburg, Germany, has learned that Middle-Eastern extremists are about to make a major purchase from an unidentified American. We are off to the races, and fortunately, Reacher is on our side. In addition to his prowess in hand-to-hand combat (he is six feet five and two hundred and fifty pounds of muscle), Jack is a thinker who analyzes data, makes critical decisions, deploys resources as needed, and uses his uncanny instincts to excellent advantage. He recruits the intelligent and competent Sergeant Frances Neagley to assist him. He knows that if he succeeds, he will be forgiven, but if he fails, he will be blamed and perhaps face prosecution.

"Night School" is a diverting throwback to the days before 9/11. The Internet and supercomputers had not yet changed the world. In addition to Reacher, a man who makes every word and deed count, the cast includes a German chief of detectives who has good reason to help Jack; a band of Aryan racists eager to pursue their own nefarious agenda; and the shadowy American who intends to enrich himself at the expense of countless innocent lives. This plot-driven story has the usual clichés (a race against time, highly-charged romantic encounters between Jack and his sexy lover, and a final violent confrontation), and the author makes no attempt to delineate his characters with any degree of subtlety. "Night School" may not be great literature, but Child doesn't pretend to be Tolstoy. He delivers a fast-paced novel of action-adventure that has enough thrills to entertain fans of this long-running series.
