Not as great as some of the older books
By amf0001
Cardeno C has written 3 of my all time favorite m/m romances - I just love Where He Ends and I Begin (Home Series), Love at First Sight (Home Series) and He Completes Me (Home Series) I've reread all of them frequently. So I truly love some of his/her work. But lately I haven't, and that's a disappointment for me.

Strong Enough just wasn't deep enough for me. Emilio is a very sweet 22 year old, but I would have liked it better if he were 26 (or if Spencer were 32) the 16 year age difference did bother me, as well as the life experience difference. Also, in her previous books, both men clearly brought strengths to the relationship. I felt that Emilio brought much more to the relationship than Spencer ever did, who was a bit too damsel in distress for me. That being said, I read this from beginning to end, and if it was the first Cardeno C book I had ever read, I might have liked it more, but it pales when compared to his/her older books and that makes it a weaker entry for me.

Sweetly, lovingly, and nicely done
By Kimberly Roberts
What a wonderful story. Done with humor, passion, compassion and sexiness, too. I found myself rooting for Spencer and Emilio from the opening pages and wasn't disappointed at stories end. Author dealt with difficult subjects without unneeded misunderstandings, contrived breakups or forced emotional breakdowns. It was a beautiful love story written very well. Worth the price.

Amazingly romantic M/M story !!
By D.Hart, RCIS
I really enjoyed this sweet, loving, caring, mushy, honest book. We get deep characters that we like right away, an intriguing story, and amazing, erotic sex scenes, yummy. Everything you could want is here. This "love-at-first-sight" tale is about a construction worker and the college professor, seeing each other as they are caught looking at each other. 38 yr. old Spencer, is 5'9", 160 lbs., soft, beginning to grey, and has big dimples, and apparently just what Emilio is looking for. Emilio, 22, cut muscles, chiseled features, and perfect, is a licensed electrician, with a big Spanish family, and his targeting Spencer. Bold Emilio catches up to shy Spencer in the parking lot and asks him if he's interested in getting together. Spencer is shy, hesitant and amazed at how stunning Emilio is up close. After Emilio bulldozes his hesitation, he says yes. And so it began. Emilio knows he's the "one". Spencer has a past that makes him leery, he's socially limited and had a stifling family, but the guys get to talk everything over, explain, share, and accept, with total honesty and devotion. It does your heart good to watch the men find their passions, their deep emotions, their unconditional feelings. Loved it !
Loved Emilio, what a great character !
Emilio is stronger, bigger, rougher, gorgeous, skilled and kind, and he made Spencer feel alive for the first time in a long while. Spencer finally tells Emilio his event that causes him problems yet today, and his ex cause some trouble, there's family to meet, etc..
I highly recommend this lovely tale of needs being met, strong men taking what they want, overcoming obstacles, and true love.
Highly recommend. ENJOY !!

This story has non-descript, retellings of date rape of a male, and also of a female.
Plus the way it affects their lives today, each in a different way.

Capital without Borders: Wealth Managers and the One Percent, by Brooke Harrington

How do the one percent hold on to their wealth? And how do they keep getting richer, despite financial crises and the myriad of taxes on income, capital gains, and inheritance? Capital without Borders takes a novel approach to these questions by looking at professionals who specialize in protecting the fortunes of the world’s richest people: wealth managers. Brooke Harrington spent nearly eight years studying this little-known group―including two years training to become a wealth manager herself. She then “followed the money” to the eighteen most popular tax havens in the world, interviewing practitioners to understand how they helped their high-net-worth clients avoid taxes, creditors, and disgruntled heirs―all while staying just within the letter of the law.

Capital without Borders reveals how wealth managers use offshore banks, shell corporations, and trusts to shield billions in private wealth not only from taxation but from all manner of legal obligations. And it shows how practitioners justify their work, despite evidence that it erodes government authority and contributes to global inequality.

Harrington’s research offers the first glimpse into the tactics and mentality of a secretive profession that controls astonishingly large flows of capital around the world. Based on sixty-five practitioner interviews―conducted in the traditional financial centers of Europe and the Americas as well as the up-and-coming tax havens of Africa, Asia, and the South Pacific―Capital without Borders gives voice for the first time to an elite that has worked quietly and unobtrusively to enrich the one percent.

Review
Beautifully written, this book opens a window into the fascinating world of wealth managers for the world’s super-rich. I know of no other book even remotely like it. (John L. Campbell, Dartmouth College)

Brooke Harrington shines a light into the shadowy and little-understood subject of wealth management. Using in-depth interviews and participant observations, she reviews the tools of the trade of financial advisors and shows the implications for economic inequality, political power, and societal organization. This is an important book on a pivotal profession for those concerned about how the top one percent make and keep their money. (Darrell West, The Brookings Institution)

[Harrington] lifts the veil of the wealth management profession…A useful volume for tax policymakers and tax inspectors, the book is also timely: the leak of documents from Panama-based law firm and corporate service provider Mossack Fonseca―known as the Panama papers―led the G20 to improve transparency and exchange of information to stop tax evasion and avoidance by offshore financial centers. (Kiyoshi Nakayama Finance & Development 2016-09-01)

An edifying snapshot of a brave new world of capitalist impunity. (Chris Lehmann In These Times 2016-09-12)

Capital without Borders: Wealth Managers and the One Percent is an innovative approach to addressing a problem that is even more pressing than income inequality―wealth inequality…The book is rich in fascinating detail, from the historical roots of wealth management to a description of a state system that might be called the ‘parasitic twin’ of the Westphalian model. Capital without Borders is a book that everyone who cares about fairness, the rule of law, and equal opportunity should read. Even if, or perhaps especially if, you’re in the ‘one percent.’ (Brenda Jubin ValueWalk 2016-09-11)

Brooke Harrington’s study of wealth management is one of those rare books where you just have to stand back in awe and wonder at the author’s achievement. In this intensely readable study, she offers a first-ever scholarly insight into a profession that was almost unknown a little over two decades ago… Harrington offers profound insights into the world of the professional people who dedicate their lives to meeting the perceived needs of the world’s ultra-wealthy. And, as she makes clear, the most apparently compelling of those needs is to avoid the rule of law… Don’t doubt the importance of this book’s messages: this is a significant and valuable case study at the current frontier of political economy. (Richard J. Murphy Times Higher Education 2016-09-29)

How the world really works.
By Raul A Velazquez
This book is not a get rich for dummies read. It is for the average middle to low income citizen wondering why economical growth is unobtainable.

Why taxes are always so high for them yet so low for the ultra wealthy. Or nonexistent in gains via investments.

It's the keyhole view into a hidden world dating back to feudal times.

How the world really works for the one percent
By Julien Reicheart
If you want to understand why the rich keep getting richer, and what the whole Panama Papers scandal was really about, this is your book. It is the clearest, most compelling description of the global wealth game I have ever read. It's also very illuminating about the idea that it's 'smart' for the wealthy not to pay taxes, which we have been hearing so much about lately.
As for 'Adam Wayne,' the reviewer who complains that this isn't the 'get rich quick' guide he expected, anyone who thinks that Harvard University Press publishes that kind of thing is not the brightest bulb in the shed, if you know what I mean.
Read this book for what it says about globalization and the one percent; it also has fascinating insights on the lives of the world's wealthiest people, as seen by their servants. Some of the stories are hilarious, many are shocking; the whole thing will make you a lot smarter about how the world really works.

Stay away.
By Martin van Creveld
The author is an associate professor of Sociology at Copenhagen Business School. Reading her book, I thought she might as well be a paid hack working for those wonderful people, wealth managers, and their even more wonderful organization, STEP (Social Transformation and Educational Prosperity). A pity, for the topic is both important and interesting.

Stay away.

Madumo, a Man Bewitched, by Adam Ashforth

No one answered when I tapped at the back door of Madumo's home on Mphahlele Street a few days after my return to Soweto, so I pushed the buckling red door in a screeching grind of metal over concrete and entered calling, "Hallo?"

So begins this true story of witchcraft and friendship set against the turbulent backdrop of contemporary Soweto. Adam Ashforth, an Australian who has spent many years in the black township, finds his longtime friend Madumo in dire circumstances: his family has accused him of using witchcraft to kill his mother and has thrown him out on the street. Convinced that his life is cursed, Madumo seeks help among Soweto's bewildering array of healers and prophets. An inyanga, or traditional healer, confirms that he has indeed been bewitched. With Ashforth by his side, skeptical yet supportive, Madumo embarks upon a physically grueling treatment regimen that he follows religiously-almost to the point of death-despite his suspicion that it may be better to "Westernize my mind and not think about witchcraft."

Ashforth's beautifully written, at times poignant account of Madumo's struggle shows that the problem of witchcraft is not simply superstition, but a complex response to spiritual insecurity in a troubling time of political and economic upheaval. Post-apartheid Soweto, he discovers, is suffering from a deluge of witchcraft. Through Madumo's story, Ashforth opens up a world that few have seen, a deeply unsettling place where the question "Do you believe in witchcraft?" is not a simple one at all. The insights that emerge as Ashforth accompanies his friend on an odyssey through Soweto's supernatural perils have profound implications even for those of us who live in worlds without witches.

From Publishers Weekly
When Ashforth, an Australian social scientist now at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, returned to South Africa for the summer he found his friend Madumo, an affable, philosophically inclined, habitually unemployed young man, actively tormented by witchcraft. Cast out by his family, shunned by his friends, and plagued by bad luck, Madumo, with Ashforth's help, began a desperate search for a cure. Their quest took them to Mr. Zondi, a traditional healer (inyanga) who consulted the spirits in a small tin shack in the slums of Soweto, to the headquarters of the Zion Christian Church, an African-evangelical hybrid where they were barraged by eager prophets, and to the distant suburbs of Johannesburg, where they hosted a ritual feast for the ancestors. Journalistic in tone, Ashforth's book joins Karen McCarthy Brown's Mama Lola in a growing tradition of personal ethnographies where the narrator is less than omniscient, confidants are friends and not "informants," and the boundaries are blurred between observer and observed, between truth and fiction. Ashforth offers his compelling story with very little in the way of explanation. He makes no appeals to anthropological theoryDthe book does not even include a glossary. Indeed, one of his major points is that spiritual beliefs are untranslatable. He concludes that witchcraft is "something akin to a religious mystery," ultimately incomprehensible to those who have not experienced it. (June)

Deviating from the tendency of most works on witchcraft in sub-Saharan Africa to examine and interpret the phenomenon from a broad sociopolitical and cultural standpoint, this book is a narrative of individual experiences. Ashforth (social science, Inst. for Advanced Study, Princeton Univ.) takes as his protagonist his South African friend Madumo, who seeks political and economic motivations behind the superstitious tales he reports. Not for readers insistent on scientific rigor and discipline, this work neither attempts to explain nor pretends to understand witchcraft or why it is so widespread among black South Africans. The author raises many questions without providing convincing answers. Nevertheless, the meticulously detailed accounts and contemplative discourses make the book both exciting and informative. From Kirkus Reviews
From an Australian academic now US-based, a discursive and languidly paced account of an alleged bewitching in Soweto, South Africa, that suggests wider political and psychological significance.Since 1990 Ashforth (Social Science/Institute for Advanced Study) has spent months visiting and living in Soweto, where he befriended Madumo, the classmate of an exchange student he had once taught in Minnesota. When he returned to Soweto on a recent visit, he learned that his friend was in trouble. Then in his 30s, Madumo was unemployed and living in a small, barely furnished room. He'd lost his tuition money and had turned to dealing drugs and counterfeiting. His family blamed him for his mother's death and refused to let him stay in her Soweto house. Overwhelmed by his troubles, Madumo told Ashforth that he believed he had been bewitched. A skeptical Ashforth questioned Madumo's old friends, as well as devout Christians like his landlady--and all admitted that there might be something to Madumo's claim. Ashforth agreed to pay for Madumo to consult an inyanga (a healer whose skills are regarded as benign, unlike those of a witch). The treatment recommended was costly, physically debilitating, and lengthy. While Madumo subjected himself to painful purges and tried to follow the healer's directives, Ashforth continued his investigation and learned that witchcraft was endemic in South Africa. Madumo, a reflective man, suggested that it was currently widespread because of the recent political changes: in the old days, apartheid could be blamed for every ill, but now that it no longer exists there is no universal evil to hold responsible for unemployment, misfortune, and poverty. And as some blacks become wealthy and successful while others don't, it is tempting to blame some external force for one's problems.A persuasive and interesting account that gets lost in the drawn-out and diffused story of an unorthodox healing -- Copyright © 2000 Kirkus Associates, LP. Bewitchment in the New South Africa
By CodyforOrange
The complexity and problems in the lives of South Africans in the newly minted post-apartheid state are richly interpreted in Madumo, both by westerners like Adam Ashforth and Africans he has known in Soweto. Witchcraft is taken up by both westerners and South Africans as an active encapsulation of these struggles, and the relevance of witchcraft to a modern life and a modern future is debated.
As Ashforth says, "Despite the dawning of democracy, people were still suffering. Yet the task of interpreting the meaning of misfortune was becoming more complex." (9)
Madumo describes the conflict of a modern man trying to honor his ancestors: "the problem with us that we Africans, when life picks up and things are going smooth for us, we normally forget about our ancestors. Because we are trying to follow western culture." (24). The youth are ignorant of tradition, especially in an era of rural exodus, and a plethora of dangerously creative witchdoctors reflects this. The elder members of the society are still expected to govern and judge the plans of youth, however: one witchdoctor, Dr. Zonki, reflects that in the normal course of events, but especially with regards to witchcraft, Madumo must "approach the elders of [his] family and do this in the proper way" (199). This shows a more resilient side of ancestor worship, and witchcrafts role in preserving tradition, however shabbily.
The recent "deluge of witchcraft" (98-99) points out just how people use bewitchment to come to grips with living in a new South Africa. As a tool, it not only reinforces gender roles and traditional life, it has proven capable of innovation and has been profitable for many. It has also survived the secularism of the new South Africa; Dr. Zonki himself mixed potions for the fighting Inkatha in the hostel of Soweto, and yet has no trouble because of this past in the new pluralistic state. A space for the interpretation of social and physical ills, as attributable to malevolent forces outside of ones control, has survived the fall of apartheid as well.
"For all the talk of ubuntu, or African humanism by the new African elite, on the streets of Soweto the practice of everyday life was tending ever more towards the dog-eat-dog"(232).
The new era puts blacks in conflict over housing and electricity, which are no longer free as a concession of the apartheid government against violence. The difficulty of everyday pursuits is reflected in the "university-thing" comments of Madumos relatives, who are impatient with his pursuit of his new opportunities. These sentiments might be echoed by any working family struggling with a devalued Rand and the expensive prospect of academics (17). The rise in witchings and witch doctors is also related to the emergence of AIDS, which is sweeping the country.
Ashford notes that "none of the dispositions of professionals writing about Africa seemed to make much sense" (244). While I might agree with him, I want to hear more about how he sees the western tradition, which itself is based upon histories of occultism and itself has religions grounded in the invisible and the transubstantiated, as reflecting possible egress from the problems facing these South Africans. Should we come down upon "folk wisdom" which anchors witchcraft, or should we subscribe a movement towards the "folk wisdom" of Western modernity (245) which supports secularism and "enlightenment"? Ashforth gives us a detailed and localized view of witchcraft as an institution and inescapable fact of South African life, but the modern era and its changes are probably having an increasingly positive and liberalizing effect upon this tradition.
Although this is perhaps equally as much memoir of Ashforth as it is social history of Sowetan bewitchment,
the book is fairly straightforward, and the writing is succinct and modest. We may find ourselves wondering just how useful this book is, however, as something beyond candid reportage. Can we really understand what motivates the ongoing crisis of identity in Africa? Ashforth is right at least in that we should, because the implications of African demise will affect us all in coming years, from AIDS to terrorism. It is also worth considering, as this book does, what tradition can really do for people.

A Man Bewitched
By Rob Hardy
Although he is now a professor in the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, Adam Ashforth has spent much of the past ten years in Soweto, living there full time until the elections of 1994, and then going back for three months each year. He has friends there, so he goes to South Africa for his vacations. _Madumo: A Man Bewitched_ (University of Chicago Press) tells the story of one such friend, and the extraordinary lengths toward which friendship goes. It is a warm, generally happy book blending memoir, reportage, and sociology. It is steeped in witchcraft. Madumo, a friend from Ashforth's first stay in Soweto, has been thrown out of his house because a prophet of the Zion Christian Church told Madumo's younger brother that Madumo had used witchcraft to murder their mother, and Madumo had been thrown out of the family home.
Much of the book has to do with the counter-witchcraft Ashforth helps Madumo hire, through a medicine man named Mr. Zondi. Madumo has to be washed with herbs and earth from Madumo's mother's grave. There is a ritual cutting of Madumo's hands and legs, with mercury rubbed into the cuts. A white hen is slaughtered in a pre-feast to assure the ancestors of goodwill and more to come. Other herbs induce vomiting, the sort of purgative that has been favored in folk medicine for centuries, but which makes Madumo seriously ill. Ashforth tells a surgeon friend about what Madumo is going through, and the surgeon explains the danger. The vomiting can cause dehydration, kidney failure, and bleeding from the esophagus. Ashforth seriously worries if he had been too simple-minded in endorsing the Zondi cure.
The treatments bring improvement for Madumo. The improvement can't promise him a new place in his family, or within the South African economy, however; the strange daily life and business ways of the Sowetan community are a constant theme in this unique memoir. The main theme is, of course, the pervasive belief in witchcraft, and Ashforth explains how as a form of belief in the supernatural it takes its place with other religious ideas as a way of trying to make sense of the world. Ashforth is often asked if he believes in witchcraft, and he resoundingly doesn't. But he also knows that there are no arguments persuasive enough to make believers think that Madumo's treatment is placebo any more than those who pray can be convinced that prayer is not a real interaction with the divine. Trying to argue Madumo out of his beliefs would have availed Ashforth nothing, while paying for the treatment did give his friend a new life. Thus the materialist harnessed counter-witchcraft to help a bewitched friend, and brought results.

I Liked
By C. Henderson
I really liked that Ashforth wrote it in a narrative way. I had to read this book for my Anthropology class and our professor gave us a list of books to choose one. I was looking at two different books and then I picked up this book. It makes it much more interesting when Anthropologists make the story interesting to read. It is also quite an eye-opener in terms of witchcraft in South Africa. I found it interesting to read why there is so much witchcraft in Africa and why it has increased. I won't tell you why...you have to read it :)

A clarion, no-compromise call to the principles of Biblical revival Revival God's Way

The author's message is drastic, fearless and often radical. His goal for the church is nothing less than full restoration to the glory, power, holiness and dignity that Christ always intended for it.

This book is awesome reading for anyone interested in seeing God move across our land in true revival. Not with gold dust and feathers but with a move of God such as in "the Great Awakening" or "The Welsh Revival" that will change the whole culture and society that we live in. !!!

There's our own way of revival, then there's God's way!
By A Customer
I consider Leonard Ravenhill to be my spiritual grandfather. He discipled most of the men who discipled me. To say that Bro. Len was outspoken on the subjects of prayer and revival would be a gross understatement. Much more than writing on the subject, he was a man of much prayer. Pick up this book today, or any book he's written for that matter, and get ready to be challenged and convicted!

From Publishers Weekly
In an ambitious effort that is equal parts history, sensationalized gossip and political expos‚, London Sunday Times investigative reporters Levy and Scott-Clark trace the winding path of the so-called "Stone of Heaven." The story begins in 1735, when jade-obsessed Chinese emperor Qianlong endeavors to extend China's reach into present-day Burma, reputed to contain the world's finest jade. Over time the infatuation with jade also infects French and British colonials, adventurers, Chinese gangsters, Chiang Kai-shek and Mao Zedong, all of whom energetically loot the Imperial Court's treasures. Descriptions and provenances of legendary jade pieces (some of which are lost for centuries at a time) are given at length. Among the history's cast of characters is bad-girl Woolworth heiress Barbara Hutton, who receives a tabloid treatment of her jade collection, marriages, sexual misadventures and profligate spending. But the history, the gossip, even the sensational stories of the depredations of the indigenous tribes who fiercely protected their secret jade mines, pale in comparison to the authors' visit to Burma. Risking their lives, Levy and Scott-Clark pose as gemologists and, with guile, courage and bribery, reach Hpakant, home to the mines. There they find hundreds of thousands of destitute people virtually enslaved amid prostitution, government-sponsored heroin addiction, and "jade disease, or AIDS." The story of the quest for jade ends abruptly in a kind of hell, rendered as astutely as the excesses in this intriguing history. 40 b&w photos. This book's various elements rest uneasily together; no doubt, most readers will be lured by the romance of jade, but in fact the book's strongest point is its horrifying conclusion.

From Booklist
This mesmerizing chronicle interweaves legend, mythology, and history with a shocking contemporary expose of the Burmese jadeite mines. Before visiting the deplorable mining pits in Myanmar (formerly Burma), the authors embarked on a circuitous research odyssey, retracing the colorful history of the valuable gemstone. Unearthing letters, diaries, and maps and interviewing countless numbers of jewelers and collectors, they pieced together the fascinating tale of a stone so beautiful and exotic that it was said to cast a spell on emperors and commoners alike. Curious as to the current state of the jade industry, they posed as representatives of an Australian mining company to gain permission to visit the so-called Valley of Death, the legendary hills of jadeite in northern Myanmar. Once there, they were shocked to find all the rumors true: the jade mines were a cesspool of abuse, disease, promiscuity, and drug addiction, promoted and sanctioned by the military, the mining companies, and the government. An engrossing combination of narrative history and undercover journalism. Margaret Flanagan

Far Beyond Imperial Jade
By Gloria T August
I have given this book away twice because of my own recommendation of it. It is a very important book not just for the story it tells on Imperial Jade but because of it introduces us to the Empress Dowager as we have not experienced her before. One of the most important parts in this story is the visit of the English women (amongst others) to the Empress Dowager. Here we experience the very human side of the Empress Dowager and the hilarious juxtaposition of the English women in accessing this extraordinary woman and how it was that the Empress Dowager saw them. I believe that through books like this and others that we are beginning to see China and the depths of her ordinary and extraordinary people as a wealth shared by no other civilization. This may be a book on imperial jade but it is far, far more and far deeper than that which means this book is a classic.

An excellent and thorough read
By Richard Harrold
Levy and Scott-Clark are excellent story tellers, and do they ever have a story to tell. Tracing the history of imperial green jade, or jadeite, they begin in the late 18th century with Chinese emperor Qianlong and 400 rivetting pages later end in present day Myanmar. Along the way the reader is exposed to the unrestrained profligacy of the Chinese emperors and the equally unrestrained ignorance and arrogance of the British colonialists. There is scheming and plots within plots as players in the Chinese dynasties kill their own progeny to ensure a malleable emperor will succeed. The plundering by the British of the old Imperial summer palace is shocking, and the primitive warfare of the Kachin in Burma is horrifying. Levy and Scott-Clark's descriptions put the reader right into the midst of the action: the writing is so effective that you can feel the clinging humidity of the Burmese jungle as 19th century British explorers plod along in search for the mines from whence the jadeite is extracted.
Also of tremendous interest were the passages about the Dowager Empress Cixi. If all you know about the last emperor Pu Yi is from the wonderful movie "The Last Emperor," this book will help round out some of the events and issues driving the Pu Yi story along that were alluded to in the movie. Besides, the movie's only allusion to Cixi is in the very beginning when the toddler Pu Yi is brought to the Forbidden City. Levy and Scott-Clark reveal to the reader from where Cixi came and how her desire for the jadeite was often at the core of her political machinations.
And then there are the final chapters that reveal a scenario so horrifying, so shocking that even the surrealistic visions of Francis Ford Coppola in "Apocolypse Now" cannot compare.
This is definitely the best book I've read so far this year, and probably the best book I've read in the past five years. After reading this book you will not be able to look at another piece of jadeite, no matter how beautiful, and not whince because now you know the stone's infamous history.

Jade: builder, and destroyer, of empires
By VampireCowboy
This was a strange book that was oddly compelling. It was really like two books in one: 70% history devoted to the superstitions surrounding jade, its history -- in terms of mining -- and the way the pursuit of the precious stone shaped countries, careers, and legends. The other 30% was more like a first person mystery and a journalistic effort to expose current conditions in jade producing mines.

It seems an odd balance. I wish the authors had devoted more to the 70% and less to the 30%, which could have been a book in its own right.

Still, it was packed with the kind of illuminating bits information I find so intriguing and makes for a reading experience much like mining - pursuing seams for hidden treasures. It was also overflowing with decadent imperial courts thrown into disarray by modernity (it would seem), war looters, and dealers in antiquities which raised many questions about the current repatriation of plundered and even "legally" purchased archaeological and national works of art.

What I like best about works of history is learning nuggets of information and making connections for myself. The Stone of Heaven facilitated that.
