Excellent book by a skilled teacher

Buddhism is a vast, evolving organism that often appears more plural than singular. Cultural manifestations aside, the term "Buddhism" refers to so many contrasting doctrines and practices that it's often hard to see the connection between these seemingly disparate approaches.

For instance, how does Pure Land fall under the same rubric as Zen or Vajrayana? Do koans and Tantra result in the same Enlightenment experience? How does sunyata of the Prajnaparamita sutras relate to Tathagatagarbha or Buddha nature?

The Samdhinirmocana Sutra, a rather obscure scripture dated to the second century CE, tackles that last question by bridging the gap between the Second and the Third Turnings of the Dharma Wheel. Reb Anderson Roshi, senior Dharma teacher at the San Francisco Zen Center, explores this sutra in his newest work, The Third Turning of the Wheel.

In his words, "The teaching of the three turnings of the wheel is a conceptual offering to help us understand a nonconceptual approach to liberation." He goes on to explain that the three turnings respectively offer us a logical framework (Four Noble Truths, Dependent Origination, Eightfold Path) to ground us in the practice, which then evolves into a refutation of all logic (sunyata of the Prajnaparamita sutras), and then finally a return to logic in the Third Turning. But this logic is free from the limitations of the First Turning of the Wheel, in that it recognizes that all concepts are mental constructs, upaya or skillful means. So it is a freedom within words, akin to Dogen I suppose, a wisdom that recognizes the power and usefulness of language to Awaken others.

The Samdhinirmocana Sutra--and thus Anderson's book--explores everything from the alaya-vijnana (storehouse consciousness), the Three Nature of Phenomena, to a very in-depth explanation of the Lack of Own Being of Phenomena. Like many stutras, the Samdhinirmocana can be dense, and so an explication from a skilled practitioner like Anderson Roshi is invaluable.

I really appreciate that The Three Turnings of the Wheel is written from a practitioner's rather than a scholar's perspective. Anderson Roshi draws upon more than 40 years of Buddhist practice and study, all of which is evident in his passionate writing and deep personal understanding of the sutra's teachings.

As I alluded to above, historically Buddhists have had a hard time reconciling the disparate Buddhist doctrines that emerged over centuries of sutra composition. The Samdhinirmocana Sutra's central aim is to explain how these pieces fit together. Anderson Roshi does a remarkable job of elucidating the text in down-to-earth prose and through accessible analogies.

My favorite part is when Anderson compares Buddhist practice to surfing. Our world may often feel like a sea of chaos, with nothing solid to grab hold of. Which is where Buddhist practice comes in. Meditation, study, and practice in general, teach us how to remain still like a surfer in the midst of uncertainty and tumult. We just surf on through the chaos, abiding nowhere and in nothing.

This was such a visceral, practical metaphor that it still sticks in my heart.

The Third Turning of the Wheel is true Bodhisattva action, and I commend and thank Anderson Roshi for his hard work and commitment to the Dharma. I highly recommend that you explore this book for yourself this summer. It may not be beach-reading material, but it's certainly worth the read.

Deserves a place in your Buddhist library

Certainly not the first book you should read on Buddhism, but if you have decided to be a serious student and practitioner of Buddhism, this book should be in your library. It is about the third turning of the wheel, so a familiarity with the first and second turnings is a necessary or at least desireable precursor to this book. And those turnings aren't the simplist, especially the Heart Sutra which receives important mention in this text. Perhaps a gander at Red Pine's version of the Heart Sutra would be a good step before tackling this Reb Anderson commentary on the Samdhinirmocana Sutra. Somehow this sutra slips under the radar of most Buddhists. It shouldn't since it nicely pulls together many key concepts that form the basis of the mind only schools,and our Buddha nature, considered the highest of the teachings. The text follows the sutra's key paragraphs, analysing each in very profound chapters. Use Amazon's "Looking Inside" feature to see the chapter heads, and enjoy a taste of the author's writing. Then buy the book, even if you don't feel quite ready. Maybe we never do feel ready for the highest of Buddhist doctrines, but it's here and the challenge is uplifting. Read and meditate with this book chapter by chapter; you'll be pleasantly surprised at your transformation. When you put it aside, plan on returning to it. You can savor it again and again. It contains timeless jewels.

Nourishment for the practic of Shikantaza

I find all of Anderson Roshi's books to be inspiring and thought provoking. Especially I find them to be an encouragement materials for the practice of sitting, which is the basic reason one would like to read them at the first place. While philosophical and theological themes are abundant, I find that Tenshin Roshi's ability to explain them smoothly and with great humour, make the book accessible for everybody. I am not a native English speaker myself, but I am able to enjoy and "feel" the warm attitude and style of Roshi's teachings. I would encourage anybody who is involved with the practice of shikantaza, and is interested in the foundations of Dogen's thought, to read the book and of course other books by Tenshin Roshi. There are not many English materials that discuss the affinity between Yogacara and Zen, and that's another major plus in regards of this book.

Still imperfect, still wonderful, still unmatched. Buy it!

The Diccionario Enciclopédico de Gastronomia Mexicana'a second edition is an expanded and revised version of the first, which is long out of print, hard to find used and very expensive when found. The first edition, very much a one-man job, was published in hard cover and loose leaf in forty sixteen page fascicles. The fascicles were accompanied by recipe inserts that make up an excellent cookbook with outstanding discussions of technique.

The second edition is in hardcover only and doesn't incorporate the recipe inserts. This is the only significant loss between the two editions.

The second edition has inputs from and revisions by committees of experts. What they add is worth the book's price, even for people who already have the first edition. Unfortunately chef Muñoz' distinctive voice is somewhat muted in the second edition.

One can quibble with many of the definitions. For example, the committee completely missed that the common name guavina -- several kinds of fish share it -- means Rainbow Trout in Colima. On the plus side, latin names of plants and animals are usually given. This is a great improvement.

Caveats and minor grumbles notwithstanding, there's nothing like the Diccionario Enciclopédico de Gastronomia Mexicana. It is the first place to look when trying to understand what an ingredient used in Mexican cooking is or to see the variety of recipes that share a name and, sometimes, little else. If you want to buy it, be aware is not a cookbook. You would have to be very skilled in the art to cook from it. But if you want to know what ingredients and dishes are, no other reference matches it for depth and breadth.

Nothing in publishing is guaranteed until a book can be purchased but I have it from one of the translators University of Texas Press will publish an English translation real soon now. If you read Spanish and are serious about cooking Mexican food, buy the Larousse edition. If you don't read Spanish, pray that UT Press will deliver.

This is a comprehensive list of traditional and some modern Mexican food with details on origin and main components. Not a cook book that is what youtube is for. I use this to get ideas on what to cook and find out what the real/original ingredients and cooking methods were. And it is in Spanish so get a Latino friend or use Google to translate.

English edition or not?

Not sure if there was an error in shipping, but the copy I received is en Espanol.

I was under the impression that the publication of a revised, updated and expanded version of this amazing tome would also include, for the first time, an English translation. Amazon's product description indicates as such. I'll be sending this copy back as I unfortunately have not yet learned the author's native tongue.

I will update this review if it turns out that there is, in fact, an English edition available. Otherwise, I will quietly sob and curse myself because I still haven't gotten around to studying Spanish.

Great book for experienced Python programmers - not for beginners

The long and short of it - this book is not for beginners in Python, or beginners in programming. Or operating systems.

Even the author says so on page 2: "The book aims at Python developers who want to create exciting and interesting UI/UX applications. They should be already familiarized with Python and have a good understanding of some software engineering concepts, particularly inheritance, classes, and instances [...]"

What he fails to mention are OS differences and install issues. The book is short, and I think it's nice to skip the obligatory 3 or 4 primary chapters of filler that many books have where you "install" the OS/platform/etc., with the instructions being largely out-of-date. Having said that, it is no easy task to get Python and Windows playing together well, and so I'm guessing that the author assumes you have your OS figured out. I'm not sure that this is the best assumption to make. Providing a short page of URLs to install instructions and such would be a nice addition.

Realistically, the best idea is if the reader is using Linux (and I'm sure some friends on the Python Facebook page will disagree...), preferably a Debian spin so that packages are easily installed and there is little to no breakage on update/upgrade of the OS. Better yet is if the reader understands how to install and use Virtualenv and is a Linux user. I had a few troubles getting Pygame installed in a .virtualenv for Arch, but it all worked out in the end. Check out the extended review for more info on that.

To delve a bit more into what I mean by "don't use this book if you are beginner" - to make a long story short: 1. There are some convention/typo issues in the book, 2. many things are not explained that the reader is expected to know, 3. The book is overly technical, and sometimes I like a bit of layman speak to draw me in a bit. I can read docs, otherwise - books are good for reference but it is nice to be able to enjoy them as well.

If you download all of the code and don't try to type any of it in, you might be able to get around some of the issues encountered, but while typing in the code - as it happens with many web tutorials on open source software - I ended up "fixing" a few things so that I could move forward.

One issue that annoyed me is the author's usage (and non-usage) of tab conventions. Python uses a 4 space forced tab style, where the .kv language can use 2 spaces or more. It would have been nice for the author to stick to 4 spaces for both types of files - for consistancey and, most importantly - readability. This isn't Ruby, and so I see no reason to use two different styles of tabulation for the same application. That's as much of a knock on Kivy as anything, but the author could adjust and make the code more clear. E.g. There are points in the book where 2 spaces can look like no spaces, and then the .kv code breaks and you get a blank canvas instead of an application (or a page of debug logs in your virtualenv console).

Back to "experience":
Kivy is highly based on Widgets, so if you don't have a firm grasp on that concept in Python, it's gonna be a rough road. Even an experienced Python programmer might not be great in this area. I think it is better to learn that concept somewhere else and come back to the book again with better understanding of how widgets work.
Moreover, it's not necessary to use the .kv language, but it can help. All coding can be done in Python classes if you like to program that way, and some do, so it might be nice to see the code done both ways.

Layout: I don't like the way the beginning examples are layed out (before we get to the Comic project.) The code is broken up into pieces which can't be run independently. Combining the code together works, but once again - it's an experience thing. Does an experienced Python programmer know how to use Linux and the cat binary? Maybe, maybe not. It's possible to use an IDE and cut and paste pieces together - but why?
And so instead, the reader might fall back on completed code instead of typing in code from the book, run it, and not learn as much by that process. In my humble opinion, there's no such thing as a "visual learner" when it comes to coding. You have to do it to learn it.

Line numbers:
Argh! The line numbers start, and never, ever end. Line numbers should start and end at each code snippet. The line numbers in this book extend *over chapters*. Not good at all, confusing, and a horrible oversight on the part of the editors. Packtpub - fix this, and please encourage your authors to not commit an atrocity like this again.

The .kv files break Pep8 coding guidelines:
This is why style and code should not mix. On page 27, this is blatantly obvious. Mixing ASCI codes with neo-html formatting inside quotes is not good if you add spaces according to Pep8. It would be nice to see pure Python code examples to go around this issue.

In defense of the author and Packtpub ebook style: the book is not quite 150 pages long, so it's supposed to be a quick "HOWTO" to get a Kivy programmer started. I wonder if this format can actually work without references to dependancies and requisite knowledge needed for the task at hand.

In closing, I'll say that this book is generally well written, and is a fantastic guide for an experienced Python programmer who wants to get into application development. The platform itself is very advanced and well designed and can export to various OS without license fees like other App engines have.
For someone new to Python who isn't at least intermediate level with an OS like Ubuntu Linux, I'd say that you could still follow along and run the code examples, but that this book should be a goal for you to reach after learning Pep8, Widgets, classes, and other concepts that are necessary to be successful with this book. The author does explain this, but I'd guess that many will jump in head-first anyway and hope/expect the internet to be a good research/cheat tool. It won't be - nothing will substitute for knowledge and experience here.

I applaud the author for making a very good first text to bring Kivy to the masses. Now, the real work begins on adding install guides online and links to style guides and best practices for the emerging Python programmer. As well, pure Python code examples could be added online as extra content.

Sloppy editing and errors make for a hard-to-read book

This book is not a good choice for someone new to Python or programming in general. There is very little help in getting Kivy installed and usable on any operating system - which is commonly a complicated problem for newcomers.

For the intermediate Python programmer it does a good job of introducing many core Kivy concepts and capabilities via two interesting example projects. There are indentation (KV files must use 4 space indentation) and code errors which can make re-creating the examples difficult from the text alone. The book also lacks a single listing of all of the code, so make sure you download the separate download for that.

The horrendous grammar used throughout the book makes it feel very unprofessional and even difficult to read. I doubt that this book was proof read by a native English speaker. Indeed, this inattention to basic editing makes me question the quality of Packt publications in general.

If not for the sloppy language and errors, this book would suffice as a quick introduction to Kivy. However I cannot recommend it at this time. hopefully they will fix these problems in the second edition.

Essential guide for learning Kivy.

DISCLAIMER: This book requires that you know python and are familiar with Kivy and the Kivy language.

With that disclaimer out of the way, this book is essential to building games/interactive applications with Kivy. This book also provides you with tutorials to familiarize you with the language. The first is a comic drawing app and the other is a space invaders type game.

Its an essential tool for understanding how the Kivy language works. It is not a book that teaches you python and that is something that needs to be reiterated. That does not take away from the vast amounts of information included in the book. Because Kivy is cross-platform, you could be running an app in no time.

While this book isn't long (less than 150 pages), the Notes, the Kivy language coding examples and an in-depth index make it worth it's weight in gold. Definitely worth a read!!

A more thorough account

There have been many books written about Smith Wigglesworth and I own them all. And even though George Stormont was a friend of mine and I will always treasure the autographed copy he gave me of his book on Smith, this book shed more light on Smith and was more thorough than any of the others. He truly was a remarkable man, Smith Wigglesworth. His life and ministry continues to inspire Christians even today. Great book.

Great book- very poor kindle version

The actual written contents if this book is excellent. In fact one of the best stories about smith wiggles worth ever written.

BUT the whole book is ruined by a really poor transfer to kindle which spoils it.

Here are the issues.

1. Table of contents is there but does not link to the chapters. In other words it is a list of static text.

2. The first letter of some words appears separate above the rest of the word.

3. The actual photographs are missing that the paper book includes.

4. The front cover is missing so we don't see the nice artwork the paper book has.

If it wasn't for being a big fan of Mr Wigglesworth I would have sent this back.

This book brings together previously unpublished transcripts of oral presentations in which Foucault speaks at length about literature and its links to some of his principal themes: madness, language and criticism, and truth and desire.

The associations between madness and language—and madness and silence—preoccupy Foucault in two 1963 radio broadcasts, presented here, in which he ranges among literary examples from Cervantes and Shakespeare to Diderot, before taking up questions about Artaud’s literary correspondence, lettres de cachet, and the materiality of language. In his lectures on the relations among language, the literary work, and literature, he discusses Joyce, Proust, Chateaubriand, Racine, and Corneille, as well as the linguist Roman Jakobson. What we know as literature, Foucault contends, begins with the Marquis de Sade, to whose writing—particularly La Nouvelle Justine and Juliette—he devotes a full two-part lecture series focusing on notions of literary self-consciousness.

Following his meditations on history in the recently published Speech Begins after Death, this current volume makes clear the importance of literature to Foucault’s thought and intellectual development.

About the Author

Michel Foucault (1926–1984) was a French historian and philosopher associated with the structuralist and poststructuralist movements, whose work has been widely influential throughout the humanities and social sciences. Some of his most notable titles are Madness and Civilization, Discipline and Punish, and The History of Sexuality.

Robert Bononno has been a translator from French for more than twenty years. His recent nonfiction translations include Toward an Architecture of Enjoyment, by Henri Lefebvre (Minnesota, 2014), and Speech Begins after Death, by Michel Foucault and Claude Bonnefoy (Minnesota, 2013).

Very interesting writing. Good to see him in his own words after all these years.

I am still reading it. It is quite fascinating to actually read him in his own words. I have come across references to him so many times over the years in reference to various intellectual positions, that I finally decided that I needed to read some of his own stuff. And linguistics is one of my main interests, of course "all the world loves a little madness", and the variations of desire make amazing reading.
