About the Author
Gene Kim is a multiple award winning CTO, researcher and author. Wish I had this book in 2010!!

This book is as good as the reviews, and better. I especially enjoyed the expanded appendix in this edition. Worth every moment. However, a buddy of mine noted that it was "too true to life." He didn't like reading it because it reminded him too much of work to enjoy it! :-) True, but for me that's *why* I enjoyed it. I've lived through most of the scenarios described here and seeing it in detail on the page was a revelation (and made me realize I wasn't crazy or isolated).

For me the most important take-away is the distinction between planned work and unplanned work, and how destructive the unplanned type can be when unfettered. I've always known this intuitively, and indeed was the very stuff I fought on a daily basis while doing DevOps at Amazon, but until this book, have never been able to articulate it in such simple, effective terms.

Of equal importance is the concept of wait time as a function of resource utilization (meaning resources of the human variety) in that "as resource utilization goes past eighty percent, wait time goes through the roof." Simple enough concept, and we apply it effectively against resources like TCP/IP network utilization, factory work centers, system IO, and other non-human resources, but when it comes to people, we feel we have to have every minute saturated at 100% even in the face of empirical evidence. This is why that ticket to the network team to open a port in the firewall comes with a disclaimer of 4 days SLA to complete the 20 second task: we have overloaded our teams' time. They're doing sooo much work that it's nearly impossible to get anything done! :-) Perhaps that's the brilliance of "20% time" at places like Google. If you build that time buffer into your cultural expectations, over-scheduling a person or a team becomes less likely.

Decent but not impactful

The authors of The Phoenix Project set out with a worthy goal - to update The Goal (by Eliyahu Goldratt) and translate it into modern IT terms - but I think they generally fail on multiple fronts. The story is not as entertaining as The Goal (which itself wasn't that entertaining in the first place), the lessons were not as useful or clear, and the takeaways were not as directly applicable to real life situations. All this could be forgiven if it at least made clear how Goldratt's ideas mapped to modern IT work, but it doesn't even do that. Overall I would say that reading The Goal is a much more worthy use of your time. I'm still looking for a book that properly translates the Theory of Constraints into modern terms, and especially software development terms.

Great introduction to DevOps

This book seems to be frequently maligned by people already versed in DevOps, CI or automation practices as being too simple or contrived. But in my mind this is an amazing book for either introducing anyone to DevOps. It's also very valuable as a tool for illustrating to management or business people the value of DevOps as a tool/philosophy and, perhaps more importantly, as a way to demonstrate what pathologically sick organizations look like.

Even if a reading of the book by management doesn't result in a full organization wide DevOps buy-in it just might result in positive change as readers inevitably see some correlation between the bad behaviors, cargo culture and politics in Parts Unlimited and their own organization.

The story driven format is a great way to introduce key concepts in a digestible manner. The characters are fleshed out and easy to empathize with. Even "villains" are multi-dimensional and ultimately shown to be mostly rational people doing what you would expect from anyone given the circumstances. It's not a riveting award winning piece of fiction that can stand on its own but it's not meant to be. Considering that it's ultimately just a vessel to deliver a concept to the reader it's actually surprisingly well written and engaging.

The accurate but sufficiently broad portrayal of the technical or procedural short comings that crop up in any large, siloed and/or bureaucratic organization are spot on–clearly written by someone who's participated or witnessed much of it first hand. The discussion of technology is general enough to keep the book relevant to almost any organization using almost any technology stack.

About the Author
Steinberg is Professor of Psychology at Temple University, where he directs the university's program in Developmental Psychology. He has taught previously at Cornell University, the University of California at Irvine, and the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He was educated at Johns Hopkins University and Vassar College, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and graduated with honors and distinction in psychology; and at Cornell University, where he received his Ph.D. in human development and family studies. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association.

Great material, but...

I think this book does a wonderful job taking readers through biological, cognitive, and relationship changes during adolescence. I was really impressed by the inclusion of the latest research modifying Piaget's theories. I agree with other users saying this book was repetitive, but sometimes the repetition was the topic as viewed from different perspectives (ex: Baumrind's authoritative parenting and how it applies to education-teaching, education-administrative policies, education-poverty-stricken neighborhoods, education-self esteem issues, education-hormonal changes, etc.).

I would have given it four stars, except that the author tends to loose objectivity when discussing hot-button topics such as homosexuality, abortion, and contraception. Otherwise, a very enjoyable book!

Good Adolescent Book

I needed this book for my adolescent psychology course. It was very informative and a good value. As a new parent, I found great insight into child development and think any new parent may appreciate this.

Okay for classroom

This was required for a class I took this past semester. The book was okay for the material, but it was also repetitive and a little dull. The graphs and figures were most useful.

Honest Review

5 amazing, mentally disturbed Stars

Let me start by saying for those of you who focus solely on the fluffy romance books, with a happy ever after, this book is more than likely not for you. However, for those who are fans of dark reads (and let me tell you I thought the first book was the darkest book I'd ever read) then prepare to be taken on one hell of a journey, because this second installment is hands down the darkest book I have ever had the pleasure of reading.

I can say with absolute certainty there is not one character in this book, other than Ivy (for now), who is not warped in someway. If you were to read about these characters in real life, if this story was to appear in the news, you would be hoping and praying that they were caught, convicted and thrown in a maximum security mental facility, never to be heard of again.

However, as is often the case in the fictional world, you may find yourself actually liking one or two characters and despite me hating Roman with a vengeance in book one, I found him to be almost loveable in this book, although I really do use that term loosely.

As a fan of pretty much all genres of fiction, It is not often that I am shocked and haunted by scenes, even ones of torture, so let me put it into context. Certain scenes in this book literally had me scared to read any more. If I could have dived behind the sofa, because I was to afraid to read on, I would have. I winced and squirmed through so many scenes in this book.

Some may wonder why anyone would want to read something like that and in all honesty, I can't tell you, but Kimber S Dawn, as lovely as you most likely are, you have one twisted imagination and made me feel things and have empathy with characters I shouldn't have and that is why I loved this book. Yes, I enjoy a hearts and flowers kind of romance, but sometimes you just need a book so dark, you wonder whether you will be able to come out the other side and quite frankly I don't think I did.

A new level of dark and twisted

Roman's Redemption held a lot of promise in the title. I had very mixed feelings from the first book, and took a lot of time to process the outcome. While waiting for this follow up to release, I enjoyed the teasers and was excited to find out more about Mace and her role in the story. Despite my background in dark and twisted books, I was not prepared for Mace's story.

This storyline does have all the components of a dark erotic novel. Being in the mind of several dark minds caused me to put this book down a lot! It was something I couldn't read in a few days. I felt the story was a bit choppy, but it could because I was reading it in sections at a time.

This book does end in a slight cliffhanger, but I am told by the author that the next book will be focused on a different couple. I hope we will be able to wrap up Roman & Heather's story in that book.

Will I read it? Probably. I'm curious enough to need the outcome of their story.

I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars because it does follow the criteria of it's genre. As a blogger, I try not to let so many personal opinions get in the way when I'm on the fence about content. I do love this author and will continue to read her stories.

Dark and twisted and...

...not in an erotica way. This had some sick and disturbing scenes in it so beware. It was definitely more hardcore than book 1 and that's saying something. I enjoyed it but I did feel that, at times, the story got away from the author. There was a lot going on... lots of side stories. It didn't take away from my enjoyment but gave the book kind of a crazy train feel. Don't know, maybe that was the point.

Speak English, Please

This book basically dares you to read it.
As an aficionado of contemporary architectural thought, I expected that this book would be enlightening coming from the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, a program frequently renowned for leading contemporary architecture into the avant-garde. I was tremendously disappointed in the book in general. While there are worthwhile observations from many notable architects (and students), the book devolves into a self-congratulatory, politically correct collection of "insights" in language so obfuscating that the gist of the statement is normally impossible to determine.
The book takes it as a guiding principle that Occam's Razor (which requires the simplest of equal competing alternatives be selected as best) is never to be regarded, and that when one small word will suffice, ten large words will instead be used. Is it so hard for these obviously very bright people to speak English? Here is a prime example from page 10, which I obtained by opening the book at random: "In blob modeling, objects are defined by monad-like primitives with internal forces of attraction and mass. Unlike a conventional geometric primitive such as a sphere, which has its own autonomous organization, a meta-ball is defined in relation to other objects. Its center, surface area, mass and organization are determined by other fields of influence. The surfaces are surrounded by two halos of relational influence, one defining a zone of fusion, the other defining a zone of inflection." I will spare you the rest, but suffice it to say that that paragraph drones on and on, and gets even more ridiculous before it is concluded.
The organization of the book is so confusing that there is actually a key to decoding the format at the beginning. The format is extremely unpleasant. Avant-garde? Yes! Readable? No! Largely the book is an index (hence the title) taken alphabetically, but there is an abundance of information in tiny font adjacent to the text in the gutters, which are, inexplicably, the hideous color of green found in the interior of a school bus.
Among the horrid design of the pages and the tiny graphics that rarely are directly associated with anything else on the page or under discussion, there is some genuinely brilliant commentary on contemporary architecture, which is, after all, why someone would buy this book. Due to these occasional pithy insights, combined with a few brilliant illustrations, I give the book two stars.
I would not recommend this book to many people, probably only practicing architects, and only with the strong caveat that it is very unpleasant and annoying reading trying to sort the wheat from the chaff, hidden as the wheat is among the pomposity and pretentiousness of the text. This book could have been utterly wonderful; instead it was one of the most trying reading experiences in recent memory.

A much needed resource for level building in Unity

This is a book I've been waiting a long time for. As a coder and a lone developer I often come up against problems with understanding the various aspects of art assets needed for making a game. How large should textures be?where should details be placed? how to use mip maps, terrain brushes, when to use LODs, are they always needed: to name just a few things one needs to figure out. Add to all that trying to decide on what is a reasonable workflow for building a level in Unity. This book goes a long way towards helping with all this. There is a big learning curve when it comes to art in games if one is not a trained game artist and this certainly helps. I would definitely recommend it.

This book is great for artists/3D-level designer and Indie-developer

First, let me say, what this book does not cover: 2D-leveldesign, procedural levelcreation and scripting
in any form. The book is focusing on building 3D outdoor levels/3D-animation using the Unity toolset: editing terrain and
developing terrain content like trees, animating humanoid-type models, sounds, and the particle subsystem. One chapter is about
lighting, here the author goes "inside", showing the usage of the Unity lighting features including the new 5.0 functions.

The readerbility and structure of the text is all right.
I'm a modest skilled Unity user (not an expert), so I was able to follow the author straight ahead. If it comes to special gameobjects, like terrain, the properties of the gameobject in the Unity-Inspector will be described - one by one, followed by an example.

The audience is pronounced clearly in the "who this book for"-section: game artists.
I would go a bit further: the book is also suited well for (Indie-) developers, who didn't care to much about the asset-creation
Unity tools and now wanted to construct their own levels. You are going to learn a lot, (I guess) even as an advanced user, e.g. in chapter two, the part about using LODs in Unity or in chapter five, the bone-naming conventions for humanoid-typed animations.
I can recommend this book without limitations.

Great Introduction into Unity 5 for 3d-artists

This is really an excellent introduction into Unity Version 5. I especially recommend the book for 3d-artists that have already a basic knowledge of 3d-modelling software such as Blender or Maya and that now want to do the next step and learn how to make their assets interactive. It is a great resource for any 3d-artist. While writing/teaching code is certainly not in the focus of this book, it is a great introduction for anybody who wants to design an interactive 3d-environment and needs a first solid overview over the animation capabilities of Unity 5. The provided content / assets are very valuable since they demonstrate the basic exchange workflow with 3d-software and Unity. That is especially important for the game designer. and shows what is important when preparing/ordering assets for Unity. In general it is both fun and informative to read the book and it really encourages the reader to get active by his/herself and design a personal 3d-environment. The tutorials are not only well done and easy to follow, but give also informative explanations about the different parameters. It is also an interesting read for readers that are already familiar with an earlier version of Unity, and want quickly learn about the new features of version 5! This book i can recommend.

The best book of all four in this series with some series hot action between the sheets!

I have read all four books but this review is only for the first one (January, February, and March). Mia is a spunky 25 year old beauty that is in a financial bind and is trying to right by her sister and her father - the man who got into a million dollar debt. The first month in, she was already in love with her first client. I loved Wes and my heart broke a little that she didn't stay with him but then again, the series would end. She moves onto her next client, a hottie French man named Alec who photographs and paints her as his muse. The sex is beyond hot and a little taboo. The March man is a hottie but he's gay and I found this client a bit boring and it seemed like it was more of the author's personal agenda. However, it was heartfelt and overall, the first three months had me addicted to Mia's story especially when she has a surprise visitor at the end of March join her in bed.

This was a new author for me... I was very intrigued by the concept of 12 guys, 12 months...

Once I started I could not stop, I purchased them all on audio, and listened to them one right after the other...

I didn't take long to fall in love with the characters.

I was afraid that Mia would come off as a prostitute... but that is so not the case... Sex is a big part of these books, but it's not ALL about sex... some months she does not get intimate with her clients at all.

All four calendar book were outstanding. The journey of Mia to pay her father's debt, find herself while helping others along the way was unexpected and beautiful. The life lessons along the way really are amazing and beautifully scripted. Audrey Carlan's beautiful and flowery writing is captivating. I will definitely read more of her books and I will re-read the Calendar books in the future because Mia's journey is worth more than 1 ride!

If your class makes you read this book, easiest thing to do is not take the class. Seriously all the stuff in this book is things you should know if you are in business. Somehow Kuratko managed to spew things on a page and make people buy it. It's written like a sophomore in high school for his English paper.

I bought this for my class, and to be honest I have wondered while reading it, how true these stories are. Good examples I suppose in order to prepare me for being a special ed teacher, just seems a little watered down at times, or clearly biased in some way.
