Excellent, useful, practical cases in clinical ethics.

This is an excellent, practical survey of the main areas of clinical ethics. I've used the seventh, and now eighth, edition for the past several years in teaching a course in clinical and research ethics at the University of California, Irvine. The cases are clearly presented, and representative of what physicians really encounter in clinical practice. The comments and recommendations following each case are thoughtful, well-considered and appealing. In class, we read the case out loud, and the class responds to the case with their own comments and anecdotes about related cases, or raise relevant questions.

This is an excellent resource for those in medical settings.

The authors suggest another method of evaluating ethical dilemmas. They suggest one examine the situation in light of medical indications, patient preferences, quality of life, and contextual features.

Because the approach is clinical, rather than theoretical, some of the medical details presented are somewhat technical. This is a book for those working in a medical setting or otherwise engaged with medical ethics.

I read the book based on the recommendation of a bioethics lecturer. It was further recommended recently by the Director of the Program in Medical Ethics for University of California, Irvine.

Cohen's book analyzes a particularly notorious (for Chinese and Western commentators) historical event--the Boxer Rebellion in North China (1899-1900) from an extremely fresh perspective. It is hardly poststructuralist to assert that people live history one day at a time, rather than according to some grand plan, and that is how Cohen treats the Boxer Rebellion. Most Western scholars merely see the Boxers as a manifestation of an irrational, bloodthirsty xenophobiba, while Chinese scholars seem to fall into two categories: (1) those like the early twentieth century modernizers who saw the Boxers as an embarrassment to the cause of national unity and freedom, and (2) those like Communist Chinese historians who see the Boxers as a precursor of their own victorious struggle in 1949. Cohen masterfully demythologizes the Boxers and puts them into the context of (gasp!) their own lives. Working from a combination of secondary and primary sources, Cohen reconstructs the domestic situation in China during the late nineteenth century and argues that domestic issues (particularly famine and floods) more than anything else prompted the Boxer uprising. This thesis, of course, turns on its head the idea that the Boxers were an instrument of the evil Dowager Empress Cixi in order to prevent Westerners from disturbing China's ancient and corrupt culture. Cohen is especially interesting in examining the mechanics and experience of mythmaking, applied in this case to the Boxers but which could be applied to just about any event or experience that has emotional or subjective importance for a group of people. This book is extremely useful for anyone, history students or otherwise, who are interested in Chinese history, or perhaps more fundamentally, how we reconstruct the past in order for it to make sense.

History, Myth and the Boxers

"History in Three Keys" is an excellent history of the Boxer Rebellion in northern China in the late nineteenth century. Even more than that, however, it is a look at the historian's craft, how history is experienced and related, and how history is used in the present. The book is divided into three parts, which discuss the Boxer Rebellion as Event, Experience and Myth. The first consists of standard historical writing, a brief survey of the Boxer movement. It relates important names, dates, ideas and events in a narrative history constructed by the author.
The second section, The Boxers as Experience, is more interesting. Cohen attempts to analyze the experiences of the Boxers, to form a picture of the past. He looks at various themes, discussing how they shaped the Boxer movement and the attitudes and beliefs of those involved. Making extensive use of primary documents, he tries to determine their thoughts and feelings regarding foreigners, magic, gender and death. Of course, Cohen realizes that he cannot fully recount or recreate the experience of the Boxer rebellion, and spends many pages discussing ways historians and writers can approach history to try to understand and explain it.
These themes become more fully developed in the book's final section, The Boxers as Myth. Here Cohen explores the various ways the Boxers have been used as myths in twentieth century China, serving "the political, ideological, rhetorical and/or emotional needs" of the moment. While foreigners and the New Culture movement mythologized the Boxers as symbols of Chinese superstition and backwardness, anti-Imperialists cheered their anti-foreignism and nationalism, and cultural revolutionaries idolized their rebelliousness and the mythical role of women in the rebellion.
Cohen explores the difference between historians, who attempt to understand and explain the past, and mythologizers, who try to use history to advance an agenda in the present. He discusses the process of myth-making, in which contexts and inconvenient facts are ignored and a one-dimensional 'history' in created through distortion and oversimplification. Still, Cohen has some respect for mythologizing the past, and notes that experience itself is "processed" in terms of culture and myth. "Mythic constructions are ubiquitous in the world of experience and form an inseparable part of it."
I was assigned part of this book in a history course on nineteenth century globalization, but ended up reading the whole thing - and I'm glad I did. In addition to giving an excellent history of the Boxer Rebellion, "History in Three Keys" contains valuable insights into more recent Chinese history and development. Even more valuable are the discussions about the nature of history, myth, historical writing and the historian's craft. It is well written, clear and engaging, with extensive notes, index and bibliography. I enjoyed it immensely and recommend it to all interested in Chinese history or historical writing in general.

I enjoyed this book immensely. The book is split into three parts, each covering the same events from different perspective.
The first part is covered just like most any other historical book. Mostly facts and dates, and reasons as to why certain things turned out the way they did.
The second part of the book, by far the most interesting to me, was the history of the events as seen through the eyes of those who lived through it: the missionaries, the rebels, and the townsfolk. Mostly derived from writings of people that were living in China at the time, it shows their feelings and thier thoughts.
The third part involves the use of the boxers in the agendas of political and social parties in subsequent years. It is very possibly one of the best history books that I have read.
Not only does it cover this particular historical event, it also is a study of historians and their craft. It looks into how historians decide what is to be recorded and what is not and shows you how this affects the way people in the future perceive the event.

Black Diamond is book #1 in the Stark Springs Academy Series, I was lucky enough to be gifted an ARC of this book to read for Gemma Reads Too Much.

I’ve read all of Ali Dean’s books to date, I think it’s fairly obvious I’m a fan but there’s always that element of doubt when it comes to a new series. Will it be as good as The Pepper Jones books? (Which I loved), am I going to hate it?

Black Diamond is fantastic!

The vibe of this book is a bit of Tijan Fallen Crest crossed with Rachel Van Dyken’s Eagle Elite Series crossed with Ali Dean’s obvious passion for sport and her ability to make me really engage and embrace the brilliant strong female characters she creates.

Roxie is great; from the first page she is fearless and brave. Where her peers follow blindly she constantly questions and I loved her tenacious nature. In my opinion there are far too many simpering female leads who all need to be ‘saved’ by the guy. Roxie is kicking ass and taking names all on her own and I loved her.

This book is set in high school, but honestly you could have told me these characters were in their twenties and I would have believed you. The elite ‘high school’ is for talented athletes and not you’re average Rydale High.

The ‘mean girls’ aka the Posse are all horrible creatures, they fit your standard pretty bully mould to a ‘T’ and I can’t wait to see them brought down a peg or five. I wish that either Ingrid or Monica would have been better friends to Roxie, they both come across as weak and that’s such a shame.

Ryker is a complete enigma, Ali if you read this please, please; please can we have some Ryker POV. I honestly have no idea what makes him tick and I NEED to know. He’s pretty badass; don’t get me wrong if bizarre that he’s so badass at only 18. But hey if I wanted reality id watch the news!

Ryker and Roxie have this very odd connection; it’s not passion but more of an obsessive compulsion. I kind of loved it! I loved this love/hate thing they have going on.

My only and main criticism of this book is that it’s totally PG rated. I would love Ali to write an absolute smutfest or just an X-rated version of this book would totally work for me.

This book totally did it for me, I read it in one sitting and couldn’t put it down for a minute. I will be eagerly awaiting the next book.

Fabulous sports romance

I knew nothing about this book when I started reading, but I hoped it was another sports romance. I love a good sports romance. More importantly, I love the way Ali Dean writes sports romance. Black Diamond does indeed fit this category and I wasn’t disappointed at all.

Stark Springs Academy is a completely different world and I was sucked right in from the first page. The school is a place for athletes to train in their winter sport disciplines. It’s also a place for the wealthy and connected, the beautiful, and the extremely talented. When Roxie Slade arrives at Stark, she doesn’t know if she’s going to fit in, but she loves to ski and that’s what she plans on focusing on. She knows who she is, where she’s come from and what she wants to achieve. If she gets there at Stark, great. If not, she’ll do it on her own. The girl just wants to ski.

Unfortunately, a complication soon presents itself in the form of the gorgeous Ryker Black. Ryker seems to control everyone and everything at Stark Academy, and even though Roxie has no intention of becoming one more person under his thumb, or allowing him to bully anyone under her watch, the attraction she feels towards him is undeniable.

When Ryker and Roxie are first introduced, I was smiling but sort of rolling my eyes. It’s not the first time a girl ends up at a new school with some hot jerk who wants to boss her and everyone else around. That said, I really did enjoy the characters. Ryker Black might be a hot control freak, but I liked his backstory and every interaction he had with Roxie. *Swoons*. And I really liked Roxie. She’s an easy heroine to admire because she’s determined and bold with the way she faces down her challenges. Not to mention, she’s a good friend, daughter and teammate.

Another thing I like: the way Ali Dean writes the action in her sports romances. There were several moments which had me pumping my fist and whooping out loud as I quite literally cheered Roxie on. The description of all training sessions and events left me breathless and engaged. At the end of the book I was left craving more of Roxie Slade and Ryker Black, and all their friends! I wasn’t ready for the story to be over and I’m already hanging out for the next book in the series.

I loved every minute of it. Well done, Ali Dean.

It's usually quite hard for me to rate a book ...

It's usually quite hard for me to rate a book so low. I have never in all my days done so. This may have a few spoilers so beware.

The first topic I will touch on is the writing. It angered me. These teenagers sound extremely out of touch from their actions all the way down to their speech. Who says "I'm down" or "I'm outta here"? Just no. I am sorry author, you might be a little out of touch with the lingo of the younger generation and how they act.

Second, the plot was terrible. Pacing was awful and the characters seemed like absolute strangers to me. I felt like I knew no one and was struggling to match names to characters. There was no actual direction with the story which made it seem all over the place. I can't stand a book where I feel like I can't relate or at least feel some type of attachment to characters.

The relationship between Roxanne and Ryker was the last straw. You want to know the extent and depth of their relationship? If you've had the wonderful opportunity to read 50 Shades of Grey (Sarcasm, my dears.), same exact concept except worse. The CEO is an 18 year old brat who literally exudes and shows dangerous and psycho behavior when Roxanne just stands NEAR a guy! And you know what she does? Continues wishing the person she barely knows would kiss her some more!

This BOY literally told her she could not stand near a best friend of hers who she has known for years out of pure jealosy. The side characters don't even add anything to the story or have any backbone. Everyone follows what Mr. Black says or else. You have your typical bully females that get upset over him showing someone else attention and so on.

Rant over. You want to read this? If you haven't, please try kindle unlimited and get it that way and save yourself the anger of spending your money. Glad I didn't spend a dime.

About the Author
Ronald L. Fournier is a professor in the Department of Bioengineering at The University of Toledo. He is also the founding chair of the Department of Bioengineering. During his twenty years at Toledo, he has taught a variety of chemical engineering and bioengineering subjects to include courses in biochemical engineering, biomedical engineering transport phenomena, biomedical engineering design, and artificial organs. His research interests and scholarly publications are in the areas of bioartificial organs, tissue engineering, novel bioreactors, and pharmacokinetics.

Prof. Fournier is on the editorial review board of Technology and Healthcare in the International Journal of Health Care Engineering. He is a research journal reviewer for the following journals: AIChE Journal, Biotechnology and Bioengineering, Biomaterials, Cell Transplantation, Tissue Engineering, Industrial & Engineering Chemistry, and Enzyme & Microbial Technology. Prof. Fournier is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, American Diabetes Association, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation International, American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Chemical Society, Cell Transplantation Society, Biomedical Engineering Society, American Society of Engineering Education, and is a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical & Biological Engineering.

It's a text book

What can I say, odds are you have to buy this whether you like it or not. In the off chance that you don't this one of the better Engineering text books. One huge thing is that it has a list of variables in the beginning of the book. This is NOT common in engineering text books and is a great help, especially if you are forgetful like me. It included examples that, while helpful, did not always explain their logical leaps or assumptions.

About the Author
Alfred Corbin received his initial electronics education in the U.S. Navy Electronics Technician Training Program during World War II. Following the war years, he attended the University of Maryland, earning the Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. After seven years as an analog computer designer at Engineering Research Corp. in Riverdale, Maryland, during which he had the opportunity to be involved in some of the company's initial design work with transistors, Corbin migrated with his young family to the Cape Canaveral area of Florida to work as a Timing Systems engineer with RCA on the Atlantic Missile Range. In 1960, he became one of the founders of Metric Systems Corp. in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, starting as Chief of Digital Systems and ultimately becoming company president. In 1972, Corbin started Technical Services Laboratory where he was the owner/chief engineer for some 25 years, and presently serves as a consulting engineer. His son Andrew now manages the company. In his career of some 60 years, Corbin has seen and been involved in a period of tremendous technological changes. In his experience as a design engineer, he has worked in and on vacuum-tube circuits, early transistor developments and more recently in applications of microprocessors and associated software. Corbin has several patents or patents pending in computer circuitry, has published technical articles in various trade journals, and has previously published a textbook, "Computer Data Handling Circuits".

History of electronics?

Whilst "The Third Element" contains much writing of interest, it suffers from three problems. The first is that it is difficult to gauge to whom the book is directed. For example, the author on the one hand deliberately glosses over many technical details about the electronics of an application but subsequently goes into a lengthy discussion of the complexities of the application. This was particularly evident when discussing radio navigation.
The second problem with the book is that it lacks a coherent structure. There does not appear to be a thread or theme running through the work, but it is rather a collection of topics which are loosely related to each other. The result is that there is quite a lot of repetition. For example we are treated to two explanations of feedback within a few pages of each other. Why? The obvious theme that would have given the book structure should have been the electronics that applies. Sadly much of the development of the electronics in an application or topic is superficially treated. This is the third and I believe the most serious shortcoming of the book. It does not live up to its subtitle. The title was a brilliant idea, suggesting that what was to follow would trace the historical development of electronic devices, what drove their development, the people involved and how they brought benefits to the various applications of electronics or how they opened up new applications. However, the text glossed over many developments of electronic devices and quickly focused on developments within applications. This was particularly so in the discussion of radar and radio navigation. Why was no mention made of the klystron and the travelling wave tube? Why was the magnetron just briefly referred to while going into pages of writing about different systems of radio navigation for aircraft? Likewise, the discussion of television focused less on the electronics of say the cathode ray tube and more on the mechanical problems of writing video signals to magnetic tape. Earlier, the tetrode and pentode thermionic valves were briefly mentioned but no discussion of what drove their development or who did the work was made. Somehow, the history of electronics became distorted. Finally, I could not help thinking as I read this book that the focus was very narrowly American with passing reference only to electronics activity in the rest of the world.
The book makes interesting reading but if the reader is looking for a discussion of the development of electronic devices, he or she will be disappointed.

Excellent Book - For A Certain Audience

As a Field Service Engineer, I found this to be an excellent book, because everything I have done in my 35 plus year career is based upon a foundation of knowledge which first became of significance in 1906. The discovery of how to use electricity for doing useful work is the first concept which jumps out at you, followed by how this was accomplished. It is written in plain English. There is no calculus and differential equations. Just a nice journey of discovery with some information you may have already been aware of and some new discoveries along the way. Starting with short range telegraph expanded to long distance communication with Morse Code. How did they solve the distance problem? I won't give it away. How about telephone? How did they finally get it to work and how did they solve the long distance problem? These days we can talk on the telephone anyplace around the world. It wasn't that way back then. When Edison invented the Light Bulb, there was a problem with the filament evaporating away and depositing on the inside of the glass bulb, so one of the experiments was to install a second element to act as a shield. It was discovered that a current could be made to flow between this second element, and what do you suppose would happen if a third element were to be installed? That's exactly what happened when Lee Deforest added a third element and discovered that the current could be turned on and off like a switch by changing the voltage on the control grid. Further improvements to this concept led to the concept of Amplification and the discovery of Feedback to create modulation which could send a Radio Broadcast of Music or Voice a distance of 1500 miles. Philo T. Farnsworth invents television, not RCA, not the Germans, not the Russians. The technology takes off in many forms such as Fiber Optics, Medical Electronics, and Navigation. The transition for vacuum tubes to solid state, digital logic versus vacuum tube logic, versus mechanical logic. From the crystal detector which later evolved into the Transistor. This is a rich historical account of the building blocks which has resulted in modern day technology. And to think, it all started by adding a Third Element to Edison's Light Bulb. It also started by adding a Third Element to the Crystal Detector, which brought us the invention of the Transistor.
