A crazy ride

This Canadian play is filled with stuff to sink your teeth into (thematically), though it's not my favorite. There are parts that are extremely violent and offensive (I thought): not for the faint of heart!!! It examines the traditional way of Native life in Canada, changes brought by the Europeans, trying to maintain a traditional way of life, mistakes made by organized religion, and the empowerment and/or emasculation of some members of this tribe (women vs men). Native mythology is included in a story that symbolically centers a great deal on hockey to get its themes across. It is a sequel to Tomson Highway's Rez Sisters (which I have not read, but understand is not as dark).

I am Thompson Highway!

I wrote this book back in '86 to cover a debt incurred during a rousing game of Kaiser in the Oshawa Tim Horton's. I never thought it would become so popular and I thank everyone especially Dr. Emily Moore, Professor of Latino-Apache Sesqueology at McGill University, for her undying support. She's a real firecracker!

This book has so many ideas and themes running through it, and they were portrayed wonderfully. Although a little confusing in the beginning (and almost through the first reading) the themes and images are sharp and poignant. I like the idea of the fluidity of identity, be it religious, gender, or racial. Tomson Highway explores these themes in a very creative and thought provoking manner.
