Not enough content to warrant the high price

This updated edition of the digital image processing text geared towards satellite-derived remotely sensed data has some good content, but like previous editions it is much too expensive for what you ultimately receive. For general digital image processing and its algorithms I really think that "Digital Image Processing" by Gonzalez and Woods provides much more quality for a lower price. Granted, this book has some GIS specific information in it that other books don't have, but I don't think that this warrants the huge price tag. The presentation is not particularly compelling either. Quite a bit of room is taken up with large tables and sample imagery rather than instruction and algorithm details. I would really suggest that someone interested in the specific problems of processing satellite imagery look at some of the online resources for the pre-processing issues unique to this field, and then look at the Gonzalez and Woods book for a much better explanation of digital image processing in general, including the pattern recognition issues of the later chapters of this book that I think are particularly poorly explained. Seems cheap, Index is confusing/incomplete

This book is printed on regular printer paper (not the normal glossy textbook paper). For over $100 I would expect higher quality. It makes highlighting and writing notes difficult because the color bleeds through to the other side. The index is extremely frustrating and difficult to use. When looking up topics to study for midterms I just had to scan entire chapters because page numbers were wrong entirely in the index or the topic was left out completely. If you are going to rip off students with high textbook prices, at least make sure you have a quality product.

This book was extremely difficult to understand. It says 'Introductory' in the title, but it is not introductory enough. It has a lot of really good information in it about the subject, but it goes right into technical stuff without explaining much, and no glossary to define new terms

Reads like a comic book. Superb Gift, Good teaching tool.

I disagree with the review written by Andrew B. Morseman on September 20, 2000, and I strongly recommend this book for teachers of higher elementary grades and summer or Vacation Bible schools. I respect his opinion, which is why I am rebutting it here, legally, in view of the public.
This book is an excellent way to expose older children and young teens to the bible as religious literature, or as educational literature, because it synopsizes events, clarifies characters, and artfully omits some of the vissictudes and harsher realities of ancient times.
While not fully accurate to the facts, the general events and key characters are magnified as the centers of the stories, with geneaologies of the Hebrew and Israelic ancestors telescoped or omitted. Most children do not have the attention span or interest to digest the historical record-keeping which the bible contains, and many are not ready to deal with the full goriness of bloodshed, sex, and intricate conspiracy which dominates all of human history. The Picture Bible dances around many such events which are distracting with regard to the main storyline, (i.e. the rape of Tamar does not directly affect the life or rule of David) omitting irrelevancies and euphemizing "mature" material.
The illustrations cleverly indicate the characters, their moods, and the passage of time, to project a limited idea of the timeframe of the individual stories, the scope of indivdual storylines, and people interweave seamlessly as individuals from one story to another. The chapter divisions are marvelously episodic, and clearly identify the biblical texts from which they are derived.
Books paraphrazed or synopsized, but not omitted from mention, are the major and minor prophets, the Psalms, the Proverbs, and the Song of Solomon. swaths of the Pentateuch are left out, and the Letters and travels of Paul, the other events in Acts and the other letters, and the Revelation of St. John are all synopsized or given prominent mention. Every book of the canonical Bible is conspicuously mentioned at some point. The meaning of the prophetic books is under much debate and is largely a conceptual or spiritual problem, not suited for younger ages. The books of Psalms, Proverbs, and Song of Solomon (a.k.a. Canticles) are mentioned but left out because they contain no story material of themselves. Leviticus and Deuteronomy contain almost nothing but the Mosaic Law, which is of little or no interest to young minds (the Ten Commandments are stated Verbatim from the King James Bible on a separate illustrated page), and other books contain material that simply can't be worked into a storybook grounded in corporeal facts and events.
As to inerrancy and infallibility; only the Truth Himself is inerrant and infallible; there are many nuances of bare facts that have been lost to history and translation, and bibles as late as the King James and Douday Original Version have been shown to contain errors of translation, content, and meaning, while scripts like the Latin Vulgate of St. Jerome were rejected as un-canonical although they contained neither gross nor suttle errors of meaning or doctrine. Even today books touted as Bibles contain many errors that do disservice to both Christian Doctrine and scholarly and literary accuracy. The admitted errancy of this book is not that of a knave, but of a knight. It is fallible so that it might be more authentic, and less artifical. I think it is very useful as a stepping stone, even if it isn't the Rock of Truth.
I first studied Christian Literature using this bible, and when I dug into the King James version, I didn't get lost becuase I already knew the main storyline, and could identify key characters. I also did not find the omissions to be misleading or ingenuine to the stories themselves, or discredit the characters or ideas presented in the stories.
All in all, this is a wonderful book for older preteen readers; it conveys the key events and ideas found in the bible, has skilled and meaningful illustration (which helps the story along as much as the dialogue) and presents religious truth without any authoritative invocation or declaration. I like the content, but I would change the title to "The Comic Book Bible."

This is how I still picture Bible characters.

Throughout our elementary school years, my sister and I did our nightly "devotions" using this comic book Bible. Though I'm now 29 years old, I still imagine all the events in the Bible just the way this comic book portrays them.

My own young children have been given many Bible story books, but most of them focus only on the cute, feel-good stories such as Noah's ark, baby Moses floating in the reed basket, and baby Jesus in the manger. The Picture Bible, on the other hand, contains a much broader story selection, even some more graphic drawings, such as Goliath being slain by David. (Don't worry, it's not TOO graphic.)

There's only one problem with this "Bible:" The characters look quite caucasian. The drawings are probably not ethnically accurate.

About the Author
Anthony Giddens, former director of the London School of Economics and a current member of the House of Lords, is a world-renowned social theorist who has written over forty books. He has written on just about every major topic in sociology but is best known for his work on modernization theory and globalization.

Mitchell Duneier is an award-winning urban ethnographer at Princeton University and the City University of New York Graduate Center. He is most famous for his book Sidewalk, which won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. Duneier's research focuses on the urban poor and other groups in the margins of society.

Richard P. Appelbaum, the MacArthur chair of Global Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, has won several awards for his teaching and works mainly on globalization and labor issues. Appelbaum is the coauthor of Behind the Label.

Deborah Carr is a demographer and an active teacher at Rutgers University, where she regularly teaches the intro course. Her work focuses on sociology of the life course, aging, social psychology, and gender. This book was purchased as a textbook for a college Sociology class. The book was the version prior to the current textbook, but other than some more current statistics, this book filled the need. This textbook was amazing because of the significant reduction in price. The book was in fair condition.

Three Cinematic Giants

I just finished reading this in-depth examination of the lives and work of these three cinematic giants (John Ford, John Wayne, and Ward Bond), and it's a fascinating study for burgeoning old-Hollywood aficionados and serious fans of cinema alike. Chronologically tracing the intertwining lives of these three "good-bad men" who were not unlike the characters in their films (Ford directed Bond and Wayne in nearly thirty pictures each), Nollen is at once objective and affectionate in his analysis, and there's a wealth of source material including documents, letters, telegrams, and plenty of rare photographs. There are riveting anecdotes, some great yarn-spinning, and the work definitely touches on their peccadillos and absurdities, though never salaciously.
It's deftly written and never dry; while many books of this kind become bogged down by academic posturing, Nollen remains true to the spirit of his subjects and opts for a two-fisted, no B.S. approach. I really appreciate how deeply he throws himself into the work, freely admitting "a meaningful (though a bit one-sided) conversation with a tombstone or two." He's as a film writer should be- intense, obsessive, and highly-focused; reverent without succumbing to hollow adulation. Highly recommended.

A Detailed History of Three Bad Men: John Ford, John Wayne and Ward Bond

This is a very interesting detailed narrative of John Ford's interaction with two of his most famous stars: John Wayne and Ward Bond. John Ford was a dictator in every sense of the word. But because he was also a genius when it came to making a first class movie, his "stars" put up with his abuse and actually loved and respected him. You'll learn all sorts of behind-the-scenes goings on, that you never ever imagined could have happened. Anyone who is a fan of John Wayne and Ward Bond will find it fascinating reading!

Pappy, Duke and the Judge

As a lifelong film fan, I've read many books about Ford and Wayne and Bond is always mentioned, usually as the BUTT of a ribald joke. Nollen manages to fill what was obviously a void by giving Bond's life and work equal measure. The research and meticulous documentation of each film and personal anecdote is impressive.
What I found fascinating was the nurturing/toxic relationship between Pappy Ford and his two surrogate sons - Duke Wayne and The Judge, so nicknamed by Wayne because Bond spent so much time on the football bench. All three were artists and prone to crushing alcoholic binges. The correspondence among the three indicate they could express their love on paper but were verbally and physically abusive when together.
I practically devoured this book and have re-read passages again. I know I'll be referring to it in the future, so the price isn't an issue with me.

Read it at least once! Maybe twice?

This book is really hard to describe (especially without giving any spoilers...but I'll try my best). I thought it would be scarier than it was. The "Backward" at the beginning was a little spooky. But it was not really a suspense, horror, romance or thriller. At best I'd place it in the historical fiction category with time traveling. You need to pay attention while reading as it jumps around a bit, and time passes quickly in some sections. The story is split into three parts and I believe I liked the middle the least as I didn't like Rachel's character much. As a fact I didn't particularly like Shay or Brandy much either. I did like the secondary characters a lot though, especially Thora K. I would have loved it if Millhiser had gone more into the backstory of the mirror, more than what was described in the "backward." And why does it kill some people but not others?

This novel would be great for a book club. It's definitely discussion worthy. I might read it again in a few months to a year as I'll pick up on things that I may not have read the first time around.

The Mirror, what it takes it rarely give back.

I read this book years ago, and when I saw the title again, I remembered how good it was. So I purchased it on my kindle.
It is about a mirror, very old and very spooky, that has done damage to people for years. Various owners covered it up and hid it away over the years, but always when it was uncovered by some innocent person unaware of it's dangerous abilities, something awful happened.
In the case of Shay Garrett, she was completely unaware, and on the night before her wedding, she found herself, in front of the mirror. It warmed to the touch and a lightening storm outside cracked, Shay felt her world turn upside down and woke to find herself in the same house, but in the body of her own grandmother Brandy. From a fast car to a slow wagon, from one wedding to another, this time to a complete stranger, she had to learn how to survive in this different time period.
Marlys Millhiser wrote many good books. The Mirror is one of them.
