I'm 22, and it scares me like I'm still 12.

Here's the deal: I read a spooky book when I was twelve. I couldn't remember the title or the author; all I knew is that the memory of long, dark hallways, doors locked from the inside and four lonely girls trapped in an institution haunted my nightmares for ten years. My concrete memories consisted of the thread of a plot: Four young girls, gifted with ESP, are brought to a private school so the headmasters can channel dead artists through their minds and sell the art as originals.
About a month ago, I mentioned the elusive book to a friend, who immediately named the title and the author, admitting his fear, as well. Pretending to buy for a younger sister who doesn't exist, I bought the book again -- with a new cover no longer featuring the young heroine with a candle -- and was overcome once more by Lois Duncan's ability to surround the simple narrative with swirling mists, dark corners and flickering candlelight.
DOWN A DARK HALL introduced me to the glorious world of wondering what's behind the door, a passion that extended into Stephen King, Clive Barker and even dark comic books. But even the "adult" writers can't capture atmosphere the way Duncan can. Like King's Carrie, Duncan illustrates the pain and chaos of adolescent girlhood, and the impossibility of escaping a world that doesn't understand. The difference is that your little sister can read Duncan while she's still young enough to feel the character's confusion... and the impact is strong enough to last a decade.

Wonderful

I remember years ago when I first picked up this book I really didn't expect much from it. I must say I was blown away with because it had elements that I loved. Ever since I read this book, I've been a Lois Duncan fan. The book is about a a fourteen-year old girl named Kit going to a special boarding school named Blackwood while her mother and her new stepfather take a long Honeymoon. But Kit soon finds out some thing strange: they are only four girls in the boarding school. What follows is a supernatural mystery. Kit and her new friend Sandy soon find out the reasons why they were selected to attend Blackwood. Soon their lives are at stake and it's up to Kit to find a way out.
Great read. I highly recommend it.

No no NO!

If you read this book years ago try to find a really good condition used copy but don't buy this edition! I did not know it was an "updated" edition for "modern audiences" and purchased it. I had read the book about 10+ times over the years but the last time I had read it was many years ago. This time when I cozied up with the book and started reading it I did not feel "connected" to the book as I had in the past. I kept thinking, "I don't remember this being said (or this being described) quite like that!" but figured it was simply because it had been so long since I had last read it. Then Madame shows Kit the sitting room that includes a WIDE SCREEN TV I said WTH?, turned the book over and there on the back cover was an advertisement for Duncan's other books with the caption:

"These new editions feature modernized text and a Q&A with Lois Duncan."

When Kit a little later says "Totally" to Sandy (Valley Girl style) I slammed the book shut and it is now in the recycling bin.

Duncan has not really written much in the past 2+ decades so maybe her income is drying up. But modifying these books is like colorizing It's a Wonderful Life. Disgraceful and greedy. If not that then she has no faith in today's youth. Feeling that you need to splatter your novels with popular slang and references to gadgets to win over a new generation of readers is offensive IMO. My daughter reads many books written in the 1960's and 1970's and they are as exciting to her today as they were for me then. She will NOT be reading Duncan's "updated" versions!

Enlightened Speculation

The subtitle promises that Ostroff will explain "what the organization of the future actually looks like and how it delivers value to customers." It is more accurate to say that Ostroff suggests what that organization will probably look like...and how it will probably deliver value to customers. Specifically, what he calls the Horizontal Organization "organizes around core process groups. All the people who work on a core process are brought together into a group that can easily coordinate its efforts and maximize the value of of what it delivers to customers." It differs from other models in that it is more comprehensive by incorporating "elements of some of the existing concepts, such as process reengineering, individual empowerment, and teams. But it goes beyond them by providing an overall framework for the organization that integrates and makes use of the best of these ideas in a new structure that has been proved in practice." So, Ostroff's intention is to help his reader understand what the Horizontal Organization is, how it works, how it can be developed, and how to decide where it can be effectively employed in any organization.
I rate this book so highly, not because it provides THE answers but because Ostroff asks what I consider to be the important questions as all of us proceed into an uncertain future. There are so many paradigm shifts occurring simultaneously. Words such as "organization" and "customer" seem to be redefined constantly, as are the concepts of "leader" and "manager" as well as "core business" and "competitive marketplace." Of course, despite what his book's subtitle suggests, Ostroff is well aware of all this. He thinks clearly, writes well, and in his concluding remarks indicates a proper respect for "buy in" throughout any organization., asserting that "the change effort itself and the new organization born from the old must have full top-down, bottom-up, cross-functional commitment. If done right, the integration of the fundamental principles of the horizontal organization will inspire the people in your organization, supercharge their performance, and create a winning value proposition that lifts your organization far above the competition."

Nothing New Here

The Horizontal Organization by Frank Ostroff is well written and an easy read. Its main draw back is that the author is claims that he is presenting something new when in fact it is not. The concept outlined in his book and the design principles for the horizontal organization are nothing but a "dumbed" down version of basic industrial engineering principles that has been espoused for years. The concept of organizing around business processes and with cross-functional teams has been discribed in various books by industrial engineers for years, espesially in the area of socio-technical systems design theory. The book is good in that it gives managers, with business major degrees, a good introduction to a sound organizational design theory. Any manager with an industrial or systems engineering degree will already be aware of these principles for organizational design to a far greater extent than the author.

A How-to manual for Change Managers

The author sees the tradition vertical structure of business as an outdated structure from the industrial era. This book pushes the horizontal organization. The horizontal organization does not divide the company into departments. Instead, it groups people and work across core processes. These core processes all work together to create and deliver something of value to the customers.

This new structure is supposed to flatten hierarchies, integrate many tasks into a few processes, and focuses all employees on what the customer needs, not what their department needs. The author demonstrates this through the use of case studies that include companies such as Ford, and government agencies such as US Occupational Safety and Health Administration. These case studies coupled with a discussion of the new structure combine to form a how-to manual for change managers, showing how companies can design and implement the right structure.

The author offers twelve principles to achieve this goal:

1. Organize across cross-functional core processes

2. Install process owners

3. Make teams

4. Integrate with customers and suppliers

5. Decrease hierarchy by eliminating non value-added-work and by giving team members the authority to make decisions

6. Build a culture of openness, cooperation and collaboration.

7. Empower employees by giving them tools, skills, motivation, and the authority they need.

8. Use information technology to help people reach performance objectives and deliver the value proposition to the customer

9. Measure the results

10. Redesign as necessary

11. Emphasize multiple competencies and train people to handle problems in cross-functional areas

12. Promote multiple-skilling, the ability to think creatively and respond flexibly to challenges that arise in the work that teams do.

A good study side kick to be used with other resources

It doesn't have the most in depth explanations, but the GRE is more about figuring out what the 'trick,' or process is that a question is asking, and answering it within the very short time allotted than it is about having comprehensive math knowledge of each topic. I made this mistake by initially purchasing Cliff Notes Review of Standardized Math Tests, which got great reviews and is a big waste of time because, again, the GRE will barely ask any simple one dimensional process type questions. In other words, the concepts it tests are simple, but the way it tests them is not. Therefore, I believe rote practice of as many problems as you can do is the best way to approach studying for the test. For the verbal section, going through the 6 tests will help you get used to how and what to look for when reading the passages. As I discussed in another review, and have already implied in this one, I think practicing math problems is key. Even though I mentioned prioritizing rote practice over conceptual mastery, you should be at ease with the basic properties and formulas of Algebra I, geometry, data analysis, and probabilities. For both mastery of basic concepts, as well as applying them in difficult problems I would highly recommend this book, by far the best and most worthwhile GRE math book out there:

It breaks up problem types into easy, medium, hard, and very hard, just like the type of contrasts that exist in the test. With a higher level of difficulty problems than you will see in 6he 6 GRE Practice Tests, it will help you get used to a level of difficulty that will be more similar to what you will actually see on the test (the 'very difficult practice type even being *more* difficult than the hardest GRE problems, just so you get used to answering hard questions). It has tons of practice problems, and very in depth explanation. I mention this book because I think it works very well in tandem with 6 GRE Practice Tests. The former will boost your ability to answer all different problem types and conceptual understanding, and the latter will be crucial in getting used to what the most common question types are and how to apply your conceptual understanding in a speedy manner!

not at the GRE level

People say the best way to get a good score on the GRE is to practice taking the test. This book has good intentions in helping you do that, but the difficulty level of the problems in the book is too low. The actual GRE required the use of higher level vocab and math skills. This is not to say this book is a complete waste. The practice that it provides is very useful, but you can likely get the same practice off some of the other practice tests often provided in the back of other GRE books or even when you register for the GRE itself. Was it helpful? Somewhat. Would I purchase it again if I had to do it over? No.

Pretty good book

I bought the book for the NEW GRE. It was pretty good for it as there aren't too many released tests for the new GRE. However it is exactly as the title says, just practice tests for the new GRE. The explanations are kinda short, but the number of practice questions make up for it. As any good test takes knows practice makes perfect. Buy this book, but in conjunction with another one for optimal studying.

Finally the kings and queens are shown to be quite interesting!

I use this book when teaching a quick overview of the history of England to children. This book is very kid friendly and adults find it fun and interesting as well. So much for dry old boring history This is a difficult book to find in the U.S. and coming from overseas, my copy was quite abused by the time I received it. But well worth the wait and mail abuse.

This is exactly the wisdom I've been looking for. I have finally stopped the crazy ups and downs of dieting and am making friends with my body and with food, for the first time in my life.

I used to be a hardcore, elitist vegan, judging all the meat-eaters around me and believing they were doomed to disease and a quick death. This book has changed my mind about eating, how the ways in which we eat reflect our approach towards life and other matters as well. It will make you eat more mindfully, enjoy your food more, and - dare I say it? - lose weight in the process. :)
