About the Author
Steven Helleris co-chair of the MFA Design: Designer as Author program at the School of Visual Arts, New York. His many previous books includeTypographic Universe, New Modernist Type, and Scripts.

Louise Fili is director of Fili Design, a New York-based design studio specializing in typographic treatments. The recipient of the AIGA Medal in 2014, she is the coauthor with Steven Heller of Scripts.

An absolutely delicious book!

As a calligrapher & lettering designer, I'm a glutton for letterforms. I own quite a few books on the subject, but this one really stands out. It offers an enormous variety of script styles & formats--from typefaces to handwriting to neon signs & more-- organized by country & covering a wide time-frame. The design of each page is a beautifully crafted visual treat. I find myself browsing often for sheer pleasure, & it has already been an extremely valuable source of inspiration for my work. Anyone with an interest in lettering, type or design will find something to love about this book.

Beautiful and inspiring!

Thank you Steven and Louise for sharing from your personal collection that I'm sure has taken a great deal of time to collect. The examples are grouped by country of origin (France, Britain, Germany, Italy and America) and each chapter provides a large assortment of examples. Anyone interested in typography and looking for inspiration for their own hand lettering projects with love this book, I do!

Pictures of ideas

I guess the reason I find ephemera so fascinating is that it freezes ideas in time. Advertisements, specimen sheets, instruction guides, product labels, and other forms of printed matter that were never meant to outlive their immediate purpose, provide a snapshot of the producer's intent and reveal a designer's approach to solving a problem.

If you know the work of Fili and Heller, you might expect they'd have amassed a rather substantial collection of ephemera over the years. Heller, a former art director for the New York Times and well-known lecturer on the history of graphic design, has authored over 100 books on design and popular culture. Louise Fili, formerly a designer for Herb Lubalin and art director for Pantheon Books, has authored another twenty titles, many of them in collaboration with Heller (they are husband and wife).

Fili is among my favorite designers. If you have no idea why you'd want a book of this type, take a look at her portfolio of work. Though she offers a fresh and modern approach, you can't help but see the influences of 19th and early 20th century graphic design and typography.

Discovering, digesting, and deconstructing the work of others -- finding the essence of how disparate elements are arranged in order -- is part of the design mind's blessing/curse. Whether it's a conscious effort or gut-level assimilation, you can't help but absorb the layouts, typefaces, colors, and imagery that pass through your vision each day and mentally store them away. The beauty of this book is that it captures some of the best of what these two experienced designers have found and distills it in a form we can easily access.

The book is virtually all images -- there are brief introductions to each section and footnotes, but just enough to supply the necessary orientation. The wonderful cover design was created by Louise Fili and John Passafiume. (I'm told that another favorite of mine, Jessica Hische, worked on the early stages of the interior design.)

I have hundreds of design books on the shelves around me. And, though I love digital, I love print too. I get some indescribable sense of satisfaction knowing that the thoughts of so many good designers and tens of thousands of their designs are by my side.

Like pain only worse.

It's like I read this book on a dare. A friend and I were talking about the worst books we ever read. He told me he knew of a book that would make me wish I didn't know how to read. He was right. This book is one awful cliché after another until it ends in the most nonsensical climax anybody anywhere could concoct. Really. It's like he used the old Speed Racer cartoon as a science reference. Only read this book if you are a fan of junk.

Delightful & Inspiring

I got my copy of Lighter As We Go at noon and read straight through all afternoon. Greenstein and Holland are a terrific team. They’ve woven a wonderful blend of personal stories and fascinating research. The word that comes to mind is wisdom. For all the silly people who think they have to lie about their age, this is a great book, and for all the people who are happy to tell their age, this is a great book as well. The perfect birthday present. The book is as delightful as the cover!

Growing Older Without Getting Old

Much has been written about lately regarding how to stay youthful looking, acting and feeling, no matter how many candles you blow out on your birthday cake. While I'm all for staying as active and engaged as possible as I age, I'm more interested in learning how to accept with grace and good humor the fact that I'm growing older, without getting old, and to live each day of my life with gratitude and joy—all the way to the very end of my life. This small volume is interesting, easy to read and filled with heartwarming stories and solid advice and wisdom about how to remain young-at-heart while growing older, in spite of the challenges. I am sure I'll reach for it again and again in the future when I feel I need an attitude adjustment about frustrations related to aging. I do wonder, though, why the publisher decided to put the type in such a small font size when the targeted readership are into their 70s, 80s and 90s!

Barker blows his brains all over the page. This stuff is the best kind of Difficult, the best kind of Angry. He writes bleak comedy in corrosive acid, and he feels every sting himself. A brutal humanist. Check him out.

Having Drowned, Appreciating the Flood.

For those interested in the English language - its violence, naturalness and unaturalness, modern poetic capacity, or jagged edges - no one in the last 150 years has used it with the same dexterity as Mr. Barker. This collection covers his early-middle period - he's written well over forty plays - where as an artist he is still searching for balance between the importance of narrative, and his sheer expressionism of language. The results are inestimable. It is a life changing threshold for any serious student of writing in theatre - having passed through work such as this, any return to what was before is almost impossible - as generations of practitioners in Europe will attest. This is the collection to start with. As a writer, Barker is prolific beyond the bounds of believability - and even his admirers have difficulty in agreeing which are his best - but here are three plays (Victory, Scenes From an Execution, and The Castle) which show an unmatched display of power and control over the medium.

A book written in Scots? BRILLIANT.

Almost didn't get this book because I was afraid I'd have a headache of a time reading a book written in Scots. Since I loved the movie so much, I decided to give it a go and it actually wasn't a tough to read at all! In fact, it was quite refreshing to read something written in a totally different dialect/style. Trainspotting was an entertaining insight to all the backstory the movie didn't include. It was also fun to read different chapters in the perspective of different characters (unlike the movie, Renton's perspective only). Reminded me a little bit of the book Requiem for a Dream, since it was written as it's spoken (phonetically) and the perspective changes (but I have to say I prefer Trainspotting 1,000,000,000 times over).

Definitely recommended for anyone with an appreciation for colorful vocabulary (major understatement) and VERY colorful characters! Your mind will be stuck swearing and speaking in a Scottish accent for weeks. I will be Porno as soon as I finish the last chapter of Trainspotting tomorrow! I look forward (with Porno) to having the perspective of reading the book before watching the film this time!

Before you start injecting drugs, read this book.

Irvine gets into the lives of Scottish addicts and the filth and squalor they habituate in. It is more of book of short stories that are told from different character's perspective; this can be quite confusing for the reader as each chapter, one is trying to figure out who's narrating. You will need some patience as you will struggle with the Scottish dialect. The movie, has more a story to it then book. Not an easy book to read.

Of course most people have by now seen the movie, and of course most of what you saw in the movie is in the book, along with alot more....I would recommend this as a read. It's dark, twisted, and takes you through the dark canals of heroin addiction and survival.
