Speak English, Please

This book basically dares you to read it.
As an aficionado of contemporary architectural thought, I expected that this book would be enlightening coming from the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, a program frequently renowned for leading contemporary architecture into the avant-garde. I was tremendously disappointed in the book in general. While there are worthwhile observations from many notable architects (and students), the book devolves into a self-congratulatory, politically correct collection of "insights" in language so obfuscating that the gist of the statement is normally impossible to determine.
The book takes it as a guiding principle that Occam's Razor (which requires the simplest of equal competing alternatives be selected as best) is never to be regarded, and that when one small word will suffice, ten large words will instead be used. Is it so hard for these obviously very bright people to speak English? Here is a prime example from page 10, which I obtained by opening the book at random: "In blob modeling, objects are defined by monad-like primitives with internal forces of attraction and mass. Unlike a conventional geometric primitive such as a sphere, which has its own autonomous organization, a meta-ball is defined in relation to other objects. Its center, surface area, mass and organization are determined by other fields of influence. The surfaces are surrounded by two halos of relational influence, one defining a zone of fusion, the other defining a zone of inflection." I will spare you the rest, but suffice it to say that that paragraph drones on and on, and gets even more ridiculous before it is concluded.
The organization of the book is so confusing that there is actually a key to decoding the format at the beginning. The format is extremely unpleasant. Avant-garde? Yes! Readable? No! Largely the book is an index (hence the title) taken alphabetically, but there is an abundance of information in tiny font adjacent to the text in the gutters, which are, inexplicably, the hideous color of green found in the interior of a school bus.
Among the horrid design of the pages and the tiny graphics that rarely are directly associated with anything else on the page or under discussion, there is some genuinely brilliant commentary on contemporary architecture, which is, after all, why someone would buy this book. Due to these occasional pithy insights, combined with a few brilliant illustrations, I give the book two stars.
I would not recommend this book to many people, probably only practicing architects, and only with the strong caveat that it is very unpleasant and annoying reading trying to sort the wheat from the chaff, hidden as the wheat is among the pomposity and pretentiousness of the text. This book could have been utterly wonderful; instead it was one of the most trying reading experiences in recent memory.

A much needed resource for level building in Unity

This is a book I've been waiting a long time for. As a coder and a lone developer I often come up against problems with understanding the various aspects of art assets needed for making a game. How large should textures be?where should details be placed? how to use mip maps, terrain brushes, when to use LODs, are they always needed: to name just a few things one needs to figure out. Add to all that trying to decide on what is a reasonable workflow for building a level in Unity. This book goes a long way towards helping with all this. There is a big learning curve when it comes to art in games if one is not a trained game artist and this certainly helps. I would definitely recommend it.

This book is great for artists/3D-level designer and Indie-developer

First, let me say, what this book does not cover: 2D-leveldesign, procedural levelcreation and scripting
in any form. The book is focusing on building 3D outdoor levels/3D-animation using the Unity toolset: editing terrain and
developing terrain content like trees, animating humanoid-type models, sounds, and the particle subsystem. One chapter is about
lighting, here the author goes "inside", showing the usage of the Unity lighting features including the new 5.0 functions.

The readerbility and structure of the text is all right.
I'm a modest skilled Unity user (not an expert), so I was able to follow the author straight ahead. If it comes to special gameobjects, like terrain, the properties of the gameobject in the Unity-Inspector will be described - one by one, followed by an example.

The audience is pronounced clearly in the "who this book for"-section: game artists.
I would go a bit further: the book is also suited well for (Indie-) developers, who didn't care to much about the asset-creation
Unity tools and now wanted to construct their own levels. You are going to learn a lot, (I guess) even as an advanced user, e.g. in chapter two, the part about using LODs in Unity or in chapter five, the bone-naming conventions for humanoid-typed animations.
I can recommend this book without limitations.

Great Introduction into Unity 5 for 3d-artists

This is really an excellent introduction into Unity Version 5. I especially recommend the book for 3d-artists that have already a basic knowledge of 3d-modelling software such as Blender or Maya and that now want to do the next step and learn how to make their assets interactive. It is a great resource for any 3d-artist. While writing/teaching code is certainly not in the focus of this book, it is a great introduction for anybody who wants to design an interactive 3d-environment and needs a first solid overview over the animation capabilities of Unity 5. The provided content / assets are very valuable since they demonstrate the basic exchange workflow with 3d-software and Unity. That is especially important for the game designer. and shows what is important when preparing/ordering assets for Unity. In general it is both fun and informative to read the book and it really encourages the reader to get active by his/herself and design a personal 3d-environment. The tutorials are not only well done and easy to follow, but give also informative explanations about the different parameters. It is also an interesting read for readers that are already familiar with an earlier version of Unity, and want quickly learn about the new features of version 5! This book i can recommend.

The best book of all four in this series with some series hot action between the sheets!

I have read all four books but this review is only for the first one (January, February, and March). Mia is a spunky 25 year old beauty that is in a financial bind and is trying to right by her sister and her father - the man who got into a million dollar debt. The first month in, she was already in love with her first client. I loved Wes and my heart broke a little that she didn't stay with him but then again, the series would end. She moves onto her next client, a hottie French man named Alec who photographs and paints her as his muse. The sex is beyond hot and a little taboo. The March man is a hottie but he's gay and I found this client a bit boring and it seemed like it was more of the author's personal agenda. However, it was heartfelt and overall, the first three months had me addicted to Mia's story especially when she has a surprise visitor at the end of March join her in bed.

GREAT SERIES.... Sexy but not Trashy... LOVED IT!!!!

This was a new author for me... I was very intrigued by the concept of 12 guys, 12 months...

Once I started I could not stop, I purchased them all on audio, and listened to them one right after the other...

I didn't take long to fall in love with the characters.

I was afraid that Mia would come off as a prostitute... but that is so not the case... Sex is a big part of these books, but it's not ALL about sex... some months she does not get intimate with her clients at all.

All four calendar book were outstanding. The journey of Mia to pay her father's debt, find herself while helping others along the way was unexpected and beautiful. The life lessons along the way really are amazing and beautifully scripted. Audrey Carlan's beautiful and flowery writing is captivating. I will definitely read more of her books and I will re-read the Calendar books in the future because Mia's journey is worth more than 1 ride!

If your class makes you read this book, easiest thing to do is not take the class. Seriously all the stuff in this book is things you should know if you are in business. Somehow Kuratko managed to spew things on a page and make people buy it. It's written like a sophomore in high school for his English paper.

About the Author

Tim Szigeti, CCIE No. 9794, is a senior technical leader in the Systems Design Unit at Cisco Systems, where his role is to design network architectures for enterprise mobility solutions. He has specialized in quality of service technologies for the past 15 years, during which time he has authored many technical papers, design guides, and two Cisco Press books: End-to-End QoS Network Design (version 1) and Cisco TelePresence Fundamentals.

Robert Barton, CCIE No. 6660, is located in Vancouver, where he lives with his wife and two children. He graduated from the University of British Columbia with a degree in engineering physics, and is a registered professional engineer. Rob holds dual CCIEs, in Routing and Switching and Security, and was also the first CCDE in Canada. Rob joined Cisco from ArrowPoint Communications, where he worked as a data center specialist supporting many of the largest corporations in Canada. In the time since ArrowPoint was acquired by Cisco, Rob has worked as a public sector systems engineer, primarily focused on wireless and security architectures. Currently, Rob is working on SmartGrid network technologies, including smart meter and intelligent substation design.

Christina Hattingh spent 13 years as a senior member of the technical staff in Unified Communications (UC) in the Enterprise Networking Routing Group (formerly Services Routing Technology Group or SRTG) at Cisco Systems. The SRTG products, including the Cisco 2900/3900 and 2800/3800 series ISR platforms and their predecessors, were the first Cisco platforms to converge voice, data, and video traffic and services on IP networks by offering TDM gateway interfaces, WAN interfaces, call control, and QoS features. The ISR series of routers often live at smaller remote offices and therefore at the edge of the WAN, where the need for QoS services is most sensitive. In this role, Christina spoke at Cisco Live conferences, trained Cisco sales staff and Cisco resale partners on router-based UC technologies, authored several Cisco Press books, and advised customers on UC network deployment and design, including QoS designs and helping them through the TDM to SIP trunk industry transition.

All Things Cisco QoS

As a Network Consultant and CCIE 5022, I have worked with Cisco QoS since, frankly, the beginning of QoS (yes I am old). I have been eagerly awaiting this books release. In the two weeks, I have had this book; I have already referred to it several times to gain additional insight. This book is an all-encompassing presentation and tutorial on Cisco Quality of Service (QoS).

The book flows very well. A reader new to QoS can start at the beginning and build up to the design strategies and product specific sections. Those more experienced, can fast forward to the more advanced sections. The authors have done a tremendous job explaining the foundational architecture and concepts of QoS, and the flow and syntax of Cisco's Modular QoS Command-line (MQC).

The opening section, “Part 1: QoS Design Overview” (Chapter 1 – 9) layout the history of QoS, including the evolution of IETF RFCs, and the QoS implementation tools. The chapters build on each other, and do a great job of introducing a topic, then diving deeper into the details. Each of these chapters starts with a ‘Terminology’ section. This has the nice effect of clearly defining the chapters’ concepts.

The next section, “Part II: QoS Design Strategies” offers a discussion of business and application QoS requirements and thoroughly explores the overall design principles and implementation strategies. Applications covered include voice, broadcast video, multimedia conferencing, and mission-critical data applications. Within this section are my favorite nuggets… The design best practices and recommendations.

The remaining sections provide comprehensive design and configuration information on campus networks (Cisco Catalyst switches), traditional wireless networks, and new ‘Converged Access’ wired and wireless networks (Catalyst 3850, and Cisco 5760 WLC).

Of particular help to me was the Data Center QoS section. On the Cisco web site, Nexus QoS design and best practices information is lacking. This section fills this void and provides great information on the QoS hardware architectures and configuration. The covered platforms are Nexus 7000, 5500, 2000 and 1000v. Great stuff!

The final sections explore WAN, VPN and Branch QoS. I was pleasantly surprised with the inclusion of the Cisco ASR 1000, ASR 9000, and Cisco CSR.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone working with Cisco infrastructure. QoS is intimidating; however, this book is a tremendous resource that will ease your anxiety.

This book is kept in my cubicle and is already filled with highlights, notes in the margin, and many dog-eared pages.

The Best QoS Resource on the Market

End-to-End QoS is known as the "go-to" and "end-all-be-all" QoS book for Cisco network engineers. As an enterprise network engineer and CCIE candidate, this purchase was a no-brainer for me. However, I did not realize the extent that this book was written. The book begins with the basics and builds upon the foundation. Many different designs, standards, and scenarios are presented throughout the following chapters. The book then proceeds into platform specifics, including all IOS platforms, ASRs, CRS, wireless LAN controllers, and all Nexus platforms.

I would not waste my time with any other book. End to End QoS is the definitive resource for any network engineer- even those with minimal QoS experience. This purchase was well worth the money.

AWESOME RESUME OF QoS TECHNOLOGIES

This book HAS ALL ACTUAL PLATFORM config and review of how to implement QoS from Modern G2 ISR up to SUP2T for Catalyst 6500/6800 series, and most impresive thing is the book covers nexus switches too!!

you MUST HAD and READ if you'll plan a CCIE or your work is beeing a network admin with a whole different platforms and equipment from cisco.
